PNGA Magazine - Earth Tones
« on: December 26, 2007, 02:51:39 PM »

Those of you living in the Pacific Northwest will enjoy reading an article in the Pacific Northwest Golfer Magazine (a PNGA publication) entitled "Earth Tones". Discussion with many architects working in this part of the world including Tom Doak, Mike Asmundsen, Graham Cooke and Wayne Carlton and several more. Of particular interest are the questions posted to the architects on the challenges of designing in this part of the world. For the most part, as some may have expected, it is drainage. Very much worth a read.

Fougt said, "Before the early 1990s the Northwest was at the bottom of the golf course ratings. The courses were very short and overgrown with trees. I think when Pumpkin Ridge, Crosswater and Bandon Dunes were built to higher standards people across the country took notice. I think the Northwest is considered a great new area for people to visit and play. I think a lot of good things are coming for the Northwest."

Figures- I moved from Oregon in 1993!  And John is 100% correct - the golf wasn't wonderful back then.  Bandon Dunes had just opened, and Bend/Redmond had only a few decent courses.  Portland had a good muni system, and the provate club scene was OK.

There ARE great things ahead for the Northwest!
