The reason for the breakdown was the server crashed due to new   threads about The National Golf Links and Sand Hills. ;D

Man oh man...you're addicted.

I know that I only looked 22 or so times, myself.

"OK, how many times did you guys check in to see if the site was back online?  Be honest.  I think I must have checked no less than 15 times, but no more than 25.  Does that make me a junkie?  There's gotta be one of you that checked more than me.  Please say there is...   :-\"

You probably suspected I checked more than you didn't you Wayno? Come on, didn't you Pissboy??

No sir, I checked only once and then I called up both Comcast and Verizon and blamed the whole thing on them, and quite vocally and dramatically, I might add.

I finally let it go when some young East Asian sounding gal who said she was in Bangladesh admitted she just loved William Flynn, Alister Mackenzie and Max Behr.

I just checked my history and I only tried to log on 21 times, so Mike Cirba, as of now, you are the king of GCA.com Jonesing.

Tom,

I had no doubts you only checked once or twice.  You were too busy out trying to find the perfect Christmas present for the man who has everything.  I hope you were out getting me a present too.  I sure could use a new piss bucket.  The old one you got me leaks onto my feet as I'm standing their taking care of business--your business that is  ;)

If she was smart, it was probably in that order, too.  Though I'd have to debate her that Colt should knock MacKenzie off the list...but he should remain well above Raynor and Banks  ;)

Shit, double and triple shit---I was feeling proud of myself for finishing my Christmas shopping today, four days earlier than usual.

Guess not.

Wayno, you just stick to your suspicion and approbrium of the likes of Raynor and Banks----we'll deal with that instigator Macdonald later. Your opinion on those dolts is the last and best dynamic this website has as we enter into this 2007 Yuletide season!

"Workplace Productivity Reaches All-time High Today"

Analysts are struggling to identify why workplace productivity was at an all-time high today, especially in the Philadelphia and Chicago areas, and a particular spike at the Yahoo headquarters in Sunnyvale.

I was sick with an AWFUL stomach virus and attributed some of the worst symptoms to my inability to access GCA.

In spite of this, I think I only attempted access 10 or so times before retiring to a once every 3 or 4 hour routine.  I read 4 books....

Mr. Morrison, you're very ill!!  :D

Wayne,
I was probably right up there with you although I'm not going to look it up to find out the exact number though! GCA is my homepage so it pops up every time I open the Internet  :o

I was in the low single digits, but only because I've seen this happen enough times to know it usually takes about a day.

Last time Huck and I almost solved the problems of the world during the interlude....

Well, okay, we mostly just emailed back and forth about the BCS. That's almost the same thing.

I was a bit worried that Ran might have gotten fed up with the quality of the discussion and pulled the plug.

A question for the techies here.

While backpaging in the Discussion Group, I sometimes get the "Webpage has expired" message.  I then have to click the Refresh and Retry keys.  Is there something wrong with my computer?  Should I be doing something different?

While on OT, any advice on purchasing an inexpensive 22" monitor?

Thanks.

Lou,

To avoid this you can also:

Select the tools button if you are using Internet Explorer and select "Internet options" in the menu.  From there go to the tab called "General" and you will see a section called "Temporary Internet Files".  If you select the settings button a new window will pop up allowing you to Always check for a newer version of a page by selecting "Automatically".

Hope this helps!!!

Eric and Kalen,

Thanks.  Apparently there is not much I can do about it.  My temporary internet files settings already had the "automatic" box checked.

I am also having very slow response time on gca.com.  My computer is a Dell P4, 2.66 Ghz, 512 MB RAM connected to the internet via Time Warner Road Runner cable.

Is the problem in my end, or is it with heavy gca.com volume and possible capacity issues?

I use EZ Firewall Version 5.1 which comes with the TW subscription.  Could I have some viral issues?  Should I be using another firewall and anti-virus protection?  Any suggestions?

My apologies if this is too OT for this site.

Lou, I could be wrong on this, but I bet something that could help out your situation is by trying to limit the use of the 'back button' on your browser.  On a BB like this where data is relatively live and updated on the fly, you don't want to be doing any 'backing up'.  I've found my reading of the threads is simplified by using the 'go' button in the bottom right corner at the end of the thread.  This will take you back to the main page and refreshes it as well.

Lou,

Your computer sounds like it has enough resources to handle this site just fine.  Often times the biggest choke point is your connection to the outside world. In your case using a Cable modem is a two bladed sword.  Its good because it offers a ton more bandwidth than your phone line, bad because of its ring topology instead of a star configuration as it relates to accessing your router.  So if the "ring" is full, you are pretty much hosed, and that could be one explanation as to why you get slow response times.

For whats it worth, I too notice that GCA.com is slow at times in its responsiveness and is most likely due to the physical location and equipment that the site resides on as opposed to where us as the end users are.

As an analogy, you can have a freeway from your front door almost all the way there, but if the last 5 miles to where GCA.com resides is a one land road, then its going to be slow and there isn't much you can do about it.

Firewalls in general are like locks on a door, they really only keep the honest people out because the crooks (hackers) have the tools to get in anyways...that is unless you buy a really advanced firewall with large encryption keys...anyways, I'm rambling.  But for all intensive purposes your standard firewall keeps out 99.99% of the bad stuff.

As a general rule, I would agree with Joe, its best to use the go button as opposed to using the back button on your browser.  Might not be any faster, but it will likely produce a "fresh" page.
