Have you heard of Hogan's Walks?
« on: November 26, 2007, 01:29:58 PM »
Our staff information services manager has been asked about the history of mowed walking paths from tee to fairway, and the person asking says someone on TV this year called them "Hogan's Walks."

Apparently the story is that when Hogan won at Oakmont, he rarely missed a fairway, and still had soaked pants cuffs after every round. After hearing why, the superintendent supposedly mowed the paths for him.

No one I know has ever heard that story, and I suspect the the paths predate 1953.

Do any of you history buffs have an answer?

When the Tour started those with its events, short-hitting Dean Beman used to aim for them with his driver.

Brad, I've been there a couple of times, but I've never been accurate enough to pull it off.

I'm surprised Beman didn't later make it an official PGA Tour stat: Walkways in Regulation.

Have you ever played with a real "close-talker" that almost ran you off one of these runways? What a pisser that is...

Tony, it was a short-lived stat. From 1981-1983, the leading 10 WiR-ers all didn't make enough money to keep their Tour cards, so the stat was discontinued.

That must've been one of the many ways Trevino got into Nicklaus' head. I can just imagine Lee yacking in Jack's ear from right close up, and Jack praying for that runway to end....

You know, some of the video clips I see of Trevino do look like he's right in the guys ear chomping away...it's like driving and somebody doesn't see you and gradually shifts over into your lane...you swerve and swerve until you finally have to just hit the brakes and give them the spot...

Of all the major professional sports, surely golf is the only one in which "soaked pant cuff" would be cause for consternation.

I've seen quite a few old overhead photos of courses that show a mown strip from tee to fairway that predate 1953 by a long way. From a mixure of countries, as well.

Ken -

I have a few good friends at Oakmont and have heard the same story.

Aerial photos of Oakmont from the mid to late 1920s don't show any paths between tee and fairway.  It may be that Hogan helped Oakmont change their maintenance practice, but they clearly existed long before 1953 at other courses.

I looked through a lot of old aerial photographs (thanks, Craig!) and while all didn't have them, many clubs in the late 1930s had mowed lanes from tee to fairway.  Chicago GC, Creek Club, Doylestown, Elyria, Huntingdon Valley, Indian Creek, LuLu, Merion East, NGLA, Norfolk CC, Philadelphia Cricket among many others had them in the late 1930s.

I'm told we had them pre-1953 in Memphis as did other clubs in town.I've always heard them referred to as "ladies' walks".

I recall a story that Ken Venturi shared in Chicago years ago that Hogan was in fact a driving force in these mowed walkways. As he was probably as close a friend as Hogan would have there may be some truth to the rumor.

I kind of hate them.

They look stupid and have no real purpose...wet cuffs...bah, humbug!

How about a worn dirt path...not some fancy-dancy mown landing strip pointing the way.  Or better yet, start the fairway off the tee.

Ugh.

Mike - I like a path to the fairway - especially on wet days.  Though I probably prefer permanent paths made of natural material.

Sean,

That's a good one.  See my caveat above about "dirt paths".

I'm just not a fan of those narrow, contrived, "mini-fairways".

I've heard this story twice from caddies at two different golf locations, so the story is definitely out there.  I just did 30 seconds of research and found a story, compliments of Brent Kelley, that surfaces the same rumor and then takes it one step further to the more likely origin (complete with rationale.)

Thanks Google! (Sorry Tom H.)

Mike,

Looking at those 1930s aerials, some fairways did start at the tees  :P

The evidence is undeniable that by the late 1930s, many clubs in different parts of the country had the paths cut from tee to fairway.

Actually, that's my supervisor being quoted there.  But since the question came up again, I thought it would be interesting to hear what the GCAers who have studied golf course history had to say.
