The 15th at Shoreacres

Never been there, never played it.

Is it as good as it looks in Ran's profile and on the google aerial?

Raynor's best hole?

I only have played it once, not really enough to understand all the nuances of the hole as there's a lot going on.

It provides as many or more options than any other hole at Shoreacres and certainly qualifies as an original, two big plusses in my book. Good risk/reward option off the tee trying to keep it left and close to the start of the undulations in the fairway. Hit a good drive and the hole is relatively straightforward from there, hit anything else and its a whole other story.

Plus I made a birdie, so I gotta give it props  ;D

Andy,

Looking at the hole and Ran's one picture, I could almost envision myself purposely trying to hit to and from all the little landing areas and near all the bunkers. I can't remember a hole that made me want to do all that.

Seriously, I'd be happy if the hole were put in the fairway in a number of spots on that hole.

Kyle:

It's a cool hole, but it suffers a bit because it's a very short par-5 so those multiple second-shot landing areas only come into play for short hitters or off a bad drive.

For a while they had rough on the left of the first landing area and the fairway way out away from the ravine to try and lengthen the hole artificially; we made them put it back.  There is also a cool contour in the front of the green.

I never thought about it much but this could be an attempt by Raynor to build his "prize dog-leg" hole, using the ravine where there were dunes on the drawing.

Tom,

From the descriptions of the Prize Dogleg, that's what I thought too. Didn't know it was a par 5, either - weren't RPDs supposed to be long Par 4s?

They were in-between holes, meant to be reachable in two if you hugged the inside of the dogleg, tougher if you couldn't.  The hole at Shoreacres certainly fits the bill.  I think the version at Lido was listed as a long par-4, but I'm not certain.

Daniel Wexler's "Missing Links" describes the 6th hole at Lido as a version of "Raynor's Prized Dogleg," and lists its yardage as a 493-yard par 5. "Another sensational stretch began at the 493-yard sixth, a sharp dogleg-right par-5 requiring a blind second for those long enough to attempt reaching the green in two." The drawing in Wexler's book shows a fairway bunker jutting into the right side of the fairway, presumably at about the yardage one would target if hoping to reach the green in two.  There is also considerable trouble right for those cutting off too much of the dogleg and slicing the ball right of the fairway.

Kyle,

I agree with what Tom and Shivas have said.  I have only played SA twice, but birdied it both times. It is probably the easiest hole on the course but also might be the most unique.  Next time I play SA I think I am going to only tee off with 2 or 3-irons just to see how the course plays from different landing areas.  I think hole 15 would especially be fun to play as a 3 shot hole or hitting it in 2 with a long iron or wood.

I too  agree with what Shivas said. He IS taking liberties calling his shank on 14 borderline.

(In the interst of full disclosure, it turned out better  than my pull hook into the ravine.)
