Will the drought effect Augusta National
« on: November 13, 2007, 01:43:01 PM »
Lots of talk regarding the drought in Georgia.  Today the mayor is asking everyone to pray for rain.   I saw an interesting story on TV regarding the over building in Atlanta and another story on water being shipped from Georgia to Alabama and Florida which of course now Georgia wants to stop.

Will Billy Payne join to prayer group or will ANGC cut back on their water?

I heard Peachtree looks great and that their lake is not full, but has plenty of water. I would assume Augusta had some decent sized lakes to keep it going as well.

From the Georiga Environmental Protection Divison
(http://www.gaepd.org/Files_PDF/faq.pdf)

"12. The golf course in my neighborhood seems to water all the time. How can they be allowed to water when the residents cannot?

Golf courses are required to comply with a watering schedule, but because of the many different types of turf areas and landscapes on a golf course, their schedule is broken
down by the type and/or function of turf area and landscape to be waters.

-- Drought Response Level Two: golf course fairways must follow the “even address” schedule (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between 12 midnight and 10:00am).
-- Drought Response Level Three: golf course fairways can only be watered on Saturdays (between 12 midnight and 10am). Tees may be watered as well.
-- Drought Response Level Four: Golf course greens only may be watered as needed.

It is also important to note that some golf courses irrigate with reclaimed water, which is highly treated wastewater from a system permitted by EPD to provide reclaimed wastewater. This reclaimed wastewater is safe for irrigation purposes and is exempt from the outdoor water use schedules."

Pumping water from private wells and lakes is OK up to 100,000 gallons a day. More than that they have to have a permit from the Georgia EPD.

It's an interesting question to me.

On the one hand, the courses here are still fine, at least in terms of the greens.  The humidity has been very low all through this, and courses are still able to water, though most have long since stopped watering fairways.  I've played at three different courses in the last week, and the greens at each have been superior.  I played in a scramble at White Columns yesterday, and the greens were immaculate.

On the other hand, I would wonder if even ANGC will water fairways enough to have the lush rye that they have for the Masters, and the underlying bermuda won't be out yet in the first week of April.  Should be very interesting if the drought doesn't break a little by then, and the forecasts aren't promising.

Can someone put this number in perspective? Is this a lot? A little? Average? Well above or below?

George,
A golf course can put out that much water in an hour.

1500 gpm * 60 minutes

* 8 hours per night = a lot more than 100,000 gal per day.

ANGC will purchase all the water they need from outside sources and have it trucked in, if necessary. Money is no object.

Good point, Michael, as you drive up Washington Road, the first landmark that you see is their water tower.  I would bet that they can afford to get it from somewhere.  I hope and pray that the drought is forgotten by then but I doubt that will be the case.
