The "Greens" at Peacock Gap

I have been following Forrest Richardson’s work on the new course he is redesigning at Peacock Gap (outside San Francisco).  It has been exciting watching the course go from drawing board to completion.  However, I have to say that the most interesting aspect has been watching the fun Forrest has had with the "greens".  You won't find too many sets as wild and as unique as these.  Here are five different photos during grow-in that you might finding amusing.

Peacock Gap was always a boring course with boring greens, made challenging mostly by the ever-present wind.  This Forrest redo looks anything but boring.  Is that a bunker inside the green in photo #2, or just a big hole?  :o

Bill,
It is basically a big hole in the one portion of the green.  I wonder if they will allow a pin to be placed in there for tournaments when there are big prizes for hole in ones  ;D

Wow! Those look fantastic. Great job Forrest.

In photo #3, how much slope is there on the back portion of the green that is not visible?

And in photo #5, it doesnt appear that there is much room to negotiate or place pins around that "fingerprint" depression. Is that correct or am I wrong in seeing that?

Looking forward to getting on there soon.  I seem to recall something about it opening back up this month?

Hopefully drainage has much improved because it was downright horrible previously.

There are some other pics on the Peacock Gap site as well.  Looks like some bunker work was performed as well.  It will be interesting to see how those have changed.

I like the green undulations we're seeing here.  Looks challenging. However, I'm not sure of the mini bowl on that 2nd pic.  Maybe the photo isn't doing it justice, but at this point it seems somewhat ... out of character ... yet refreshing as something different and new to explore.  The greenkeepers must already be looking forward to maintaining that one though.

I think they are going to carve it out and put a bunker in the green like the par 3 at Riviera...

The depression is at No. 10, a par-3. The "hole" is just under 2-ft deep. I plan on my inagural hole in one there. John Rader, the greenkeeper, and I re-sodded it a few weeks ago. Bill: It drains very well. Thank you.

The fall away in Mark's excellent photo No. 3 is about 2-3 feet. That green is a bottleneck with just 20 feet across at the waist.

I fondly recal Mark texting me after his initial tour — from about the 14th hole — his message: Holy #@*% !!!

We have had fun. Look for opening sometime in early December.

Wow, where to start...

Just a question for Forrest: Did you plan those greens around a specific stimpmeter reading? Did the management request such a thing? Have you cup up with a maximum reading before the contours are just "too much"?

If I remember correctly, Forrest had me out on the course taking photos for him while he was inside the clubhouse "working" (I think he was really taking a nap).  When I got to the 14th green I just couldn't stop smiling.  It is wild and I'm not sure I have ever seen anything like it anywhere.  I took out my cell phone, snapped a photo and sent it to Forrest back in the clubhouse.  

As you can tell, everyone who plays this golf course is going to be talking about the greens.  As long as they aren't rolling at 11 or 12, they will provide a great source of entertainment.  

Note:  I heard Thursday's are going to be designated - "Hole in One day" as the pin will be placed in the bowl on #10 that day  ;D

Not bad green fees for the Bay Area: $65/75 to walk any time.  I'll plan to play there next trip West - hopefully next spring for the Kings Putter.  ;)

So Forrest, does the hole on #10 drain down through the sandy base, or is there a low point that drains naturally?  Just curious!

Steve,
As I'm sure you know, the greens are also wild at Lederach.  Maybe one way to sum up the differences is that the site at Peacock Gap is dead flat and there was not much there to work with especially with a limited budget and routing constraints (it was an existing course for those who don't know).  Peacock Gap "needed" something to distinguish itself and make the course unique and interesting to play.  I'm sure Forrest can comment better than I but the wild greens that Forrest designed serve that purpose.  At Lederach, the course not only has wild greens, but wild everything.

The website will be up in a few weeks....for now you will be viewing the old Peacock.

They are the wildest greens I have done on any remodel. A few of the greens at Links at Las Palomas are probably more well known for their wild behavior.

All I can say is wow, those greens alone make the course a must play for me if I find myself in the Bay Area.
