Legends Resort Heath....errr, Parkland Course Imagery
« on: November 09, 2007, 06:15:56 PM »
[caveat] I just noticed the website I linked these images from credit the Parkland course to A. Mackenzie and G.C. Thomas and that shoot includes some of the same images as shown below.  Now unless these men have arisen from the dead something is surely not right here.....

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

That bunkering is very attractive.  Definitely heath like although I know the course was supposed to be called "Linksland".

Wow, great photos.  I have played Heathland twice.  These pictures make the conditioning look amazing...when I was there, the conditioning was marginal.  This course played fairly easy for our group with repeated scores in the mid to low 70s from 9 handicap golfers.  We had fun, enjoyed our time but these photos seem better than my memory.  Our pace of play was absolutely horrible both times...5 hrs+ ...what were your impressions??

Concur, these pictures look remotely like the course I played. Not Doak's best work but by far the best in the Legends complex.

I don't believe those are all from Doak's Heathland course.

Most of those pictures of from the Parkland Course.

Although Tom ditched the project and understandably disavows this course from his resume, the course is interesting as a number of really good holes are from his palette, and even more interestingly, is the world's only Tom Doak/Mike Strantz accidental collaboration, as most of the bunkering was done later by Strantz for the owner Larry Young, who takes overall design credit (which seems a bit absurd).

At least that's how I understand it.   Tom Doak may come and correct me.

I like the look of this palce.  The bunkers are faced into humps(very Colt) and the brown sand seems right.  What makes the pictures look 'different'  is the sharp lines in the grass due to the way its maintained.  I think if you compare these with Philips recent pictures you can see how this course stands apart from all the nature surrounding it. It could be the course was photographed just after maintining it, vs. an ordinary day.

Whatever, I'd love to tee it up there.

Some of Philip's Crowborough Beacon snaps.

You will encounter many of the bunkers that you see at the Parkland also at Heritage Club, Caledonia, and Wild Dunes-Links (well, whatever hasn't been swallowed up by the sea ::)).  The minimally- to unacknowledged hand of Mike Strantz exists at all places.

I love those bunkers; they're brawny and nasty looking, but can be escaped if the player wisely chooses to take his medicine.

Only the last picture (and maybe the first, I can't tell) are of the Heathland course.  I haven't seen it in about six years, but the shrubs have grown amazingly big!

Mike Cirba is generally correct about the provenance of the Parkland Course.  It's part mine and part Mike Strantz's; Gil Hanse built some of the bunkers pictured as well, when he was working with me.  But I don't want credit for a course that's only part mine, and neither did Mike S. apparently, because I'm sure Larry Young would have given him the credit if he'd wanted it.

I played Parkland last in 1999 and I sure don't remember it looking that nice. Those must be real professional photos. The Legends is a great play place to stay and play golf. Since I always play new courses while in MB, I stay at the Legends and play elsewhere....

Thanks TD for clearing up the mystery as to who designed it...
