Bill,

#9 was already identified as the 5th at the Old Course in St. Andrews.

Sean,

Played too many to list but not nearly enough not to want to return.  My clues are that it is a Royal and not in Scotland.

OK, then it must be #10, since #12 has a distinct fallaway to the back right of the green.  One of my playing partners made a 2 on #10, with a 200 yard shot from the 11th fairway.  I made one of three pars I had that day.

I only played there once, but there are many blind shots.  Very hard to play the first time.  A good debate could be developed regarding blindness, and whether a quirky course like Oakmont deserves its lofty ranking.  No great modern course has as many blind shots.  You can have 5-7 blind approaches at Ballyneal, but first you have to hit your drive in the wrong place.  On #4 at Oakmont, a perfect drive yields a blind shot over a flat horizon.

At the end of the day, we walked out to the 10th tee and viewed the panorama in the gloaming.  One thing is certain:  Oakmont is beautiful to behold from the top of the hill.

My instinct for #7 is to say Sandwich, maybe the third hole, but something doesn't look quite right.

Follow your instinct, Sean.  Your second instinct in this case  ;)  At least I'm almost certain.  You have me questioning myself.  I hate when that happens   :-\

Sean et al, doesn't #7 look like a modern green? I can't confidently put my finger on why -- something to do the that apparently-perpendicular ridge.

Obviously if it's RSG I'm wrong...

#7 Reminds me of the 5th at Royal Portrush.

Yes, Sean.  It is the 3rd at Sandwich.  It is one heck of a golf course, which include some of my favorite holes anywhere.  It also has a beautifully designed clubhouse and my favorite starter's hut:

#12 is actually the 10th at Oakmont.  I think 13 and 16 still have not been identified.

Another hint on #16?

So sorry, Sean.  Nice job.

Gary,

#16 clue already given is that it is a blend of a classic era master and a modern era master.  The modern era master is Tom Doak.  The original course on that site dates back to the late 1890s and the photo is of the first hole.

Sorry, Gary.  It isn't Battle Creek.  I've been to Battle Creek, NE (my mother-in-law's birthplace) but not the golf course.  Flynn was the classic era architect of this course that Doak significantly improved.

I have never been, and have never seen it, although I nearly visited in 2006.

Is #16 Atlantic City?  Only guessing by the clues.

YES, it is the first at ACCC.  It is a must-see golf course in the general Philadelphia vicinity.  James, you'll have to come back to the area someday.  There are more Flynn courses for you to see and this Flynn/Doak should be on your next list.

Well, that makes up for the one hole I had played but couldn't remember (Deal - didn't take enough photos to help the memory in May 2006).

Wayne, how about re-posting the 20 photos, with the locations.

And, I'll see you in Philly soon.  Just after you have visited down under, or perhaps just after the Phillies win the world series, or perhaps just soon!

Mark & Sean - re the 3rd green at Sandwich you are correct, it is a new green, certainly in the last 25 years but I do not know exactly when. I recall playing the hole when the 3rd green was bunkered on the left and I believe the green was flatter. I would guess it was changed for the 1981 or 1985 Open.

Anyone know anymore??
