Pasatiempo-------with more recent pics, thanks Pat(Pics)
« on: October 16, 2007, 11:31:03 PM »
Here are some pics that I took about 2 weeks ago from a barnstorming visit to the course. With this work they will have the entire course completed. The greens have been expanded and the bunkers restored The most interesting changes is the 17th, the green stretches over 50 yards in length with the new portion that was added to the back of the existing green. The 18th is pretty neat with the fronting bunkers and an increase in putting area. But, my favorite is a toss up between the  view of the 13th and 16th green complexes from the fwy.

Since these have been taken they have finished the 18th hole and I would suppose that would mean that they are pretty much done(not verified).

View is just short of the 12th green

From the fwy daunting second into a "y" shaped green. Tough hole locations on either lobe. Bunkers definately catch your eye.

Closeup of the green at 13 showing expansion.\

14th green and fronting bunkers.

16th green from fwy. Cant wait to see that done. If I can remember correctly there will be the possibility for a front hole location.

17th green from the front right edge of green showing how much further the green goes back. May not show up too well that green is so long!!

18th green with bunkers in front and the green to be enlarged.

Looking forward to seeing the course again after the work matures.

Thanks, Tully, one of my favorite courses.  Do you have any idea when these holes will be reopened for play?

Very cool.  The U of M course mentioned on another thread could use some bunkers like that.

Holy freakin' cow!!!!!! I can't wait to get up there again and see this first hand!

16 looks fantastic! 13 looks very much in the mold of CPC and VC now.

Sean,

You beat me to the punch for the 17th.  I'm playing Saturday and had plans of posting some pics of the changes.  Oh well...  :'(

Great pics of the progression.

The 16th is looking great.  That front right bunker is looking like it used to.

This made my day. So nice to see one of the most beautiful bunkers ever created finally restored.

Thanks for the update Sean.

From a postcard that shows the bunkers as well.

John,

Not sure on the opening of holes. It sounds like Patrick should be able to give us an answer soon, and some updated pics ;).

I'll do my best to get some pics.  Hopefully I won't get rained out though...  Keeping my fingers crossed.  Stay tuned.

Tully,

You are my hero. That you are not the NCGA official historian is absurd beyond measure. . . . . of course, this is the same group that decided Poppy Ridge was a good idea.  ;D

Thanks, Sean

These pictures are cool, and show some great work by Doak and Co.  They actually want me to go back there again!

Though I'm sure Jeff Brauer will draw some poor conclusion from it, I wanted to point out that Jim Urbina supervised all of the work pictured -- I only stopped through there this summer to go over it with him.  [They had to convince me that extending the green back on #17 would be a good idea ... it's going to be scary when they put the hole towards the back.]

I'd tell you the shapers, too, but I don't want to get it wrong.

And, yes, that does conclude our restoration work for Pasatiempo -- although I thought we were done at SFGC and they want me to come back next month and talk to them, so what do I know?

Your point/agenda being???

Tom Doak,

Did the green surface on 16 change? I did think it was borderline playable at modern speeds when I played last October.

Mike, was there a front pin when you played #16 last October?  I don't think the front has ever been pinnable!  :o

Tully, is there as much slope off the bank to the left on #17 all the way back as there is toward the front?  If so, it will indeed be very difficult to approach a back pin there.  Does that back area get almost into the barranca?

Gotta get back to Pasatiempo soon........it looks great.

What IS JakaB's point there, anyway?

Man this shows ya the massive difference of opinion.  I despise this sea of sand look surrounded by green.  IMO this is completely ott with bunkering.

I hope to see the course one day, but I also hope the above hole is one of the odd two or three.

Thanks for posting Sean!

I like this quote from Tom Doak on another first page thread. "I'll guess the last two are Jack's as well, but I don't like them nearly as much ... they look way too "busy"."

To give Mackenzie a bit a credit I think the original bunkers looked much better when they were against the expanse of nature and not confined by trees.  The existing look is neither Mackenzie's or Doak's fault.

Holy Sh*t, Batman.  Unbelievable!

My only question for Doak & Co. is how to prevent the bunkers from eroding/fading/diminishing/overgrowing over time to prevent them from going right back to what they were before the work started?

Mike C:

I think the bunkers evolved during a period where the management didn't care about maintaining the original look of the course, and/or didn't have the money to do so.  It's possible that day will come again, but hopefully not soon.  In the meantime, all the bunker liner that was installed will keep them from changing too much -- it's easy to tell if the sand is getting too deep, and you can't make the bunker any bigger by accident.

Bill M:

There isn't as much left-to-right slope on the back of that green, because it starts falling away into a ravine behind the green on the left also, and the ground levels out in order to start sloping the other direction.

So there will be some wonderful movement of the ball on the green if you play a pitch and run to a back pin.  First to the right, then straightening out, then to the left?

Hopefully the green will stay firm enough to make that a reality!  ;D

Is it true that - given its public course nature and Doak's restoration work - Pasatiempo may be the best existing example of Golden Age architecture that everybody can play today in the US?

Tom, Was Jim able to create the effect MacKenzie used at the Valley Club, where certain bunker complexes, on holes the golfer isn't currently playing, provide some visual effect? (sorry for the poor wording)

It's amazing how different the course looks.

Even the white stuff doesn't detract too much from the beauty.

Is their intent to look like the ANGC of the west?
