I played in the U.S. Mid Am qualifier today in Cincinnati. I shot 71 and was in a playoff with 4 people for one spot. I won on the fourth hole to qualify for my first USGA tournament.

So, will you be at Bandon? Are you playing? If you're playing, I would loved to play some practice rounds with fellow GCAers, especially if you have been to Bandon before. I've never been to Bandon before and would love some extra advice.

Congrats on qualifying and good luck in Oregon.  Do you feel like you have a good shot to make it to match play?

Cheers,
Brad

Steve,

Congrats!  That's an impressive feat.  Way to gut it out in the playoff.

I hope to be joining you in at the Mid-Am, but I'm not holding my breathe.  My qualifier is next week.  Let's hope that we are on opposite ends of the bracket!

I know there's at least one Bandon caddie who posts here (check the 'do you need a caddie at Bandon?' thread)

  Good luck!

Do I have a shot to make it to match play? Sure. If it wasn't for four three putts today I wouldn't have been in a payoff. I've been playing incredible golf this year (handicap down to +4). I had a four round stretch of 68-66-68-67 a few weeks ago. Best of all, from what I can tell of the Bandon courses they aren't overly long. I average about 270 off the tee so when you put me on a course from 6,600 to 6,900 yards I can really tear it up. I can handle more length than that but other players' distance becomes a disadvantage for me.

My dad and I have enjoyed many, many golf experiences together. He caddied for me today and is going to to caddy for me in my first USGA event. We've waited a long time for this. While I would love the course knowledge of a Bandon caddie, having my dad on the bag will make it an altogther incredible experience.

Congratulations!

That's great that your dad is going to caddie for you.  I'd recommend getting in a couple practice rounds out there with one of the resort caddies walking you and your dad through the local knowledge.

That's a good idea Tim but I think if you use a Bandon caddy at all though you have to pay him for a minimum of four rounds.

Congratulations Steve... great playing.  Very cool that your first one will be at Bandon.

It's a major goal of mine to make a USGA championship... my qualifier is next week.

I will be there as a committeeman. I missed qualifying in KY by two. Forunately I will get to play two of the courses (Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes.)

Good luck. I will look you up.

Steve,

Congrats on qualifying.  That is a great accomplishment.  You had better luck in a playoff than I've ever had for this event.  I lost out in 3 playoffs prior to qualifying for my first Mid-Am in 2003.

JESII and I, will be trying to qualify on Sept 6th.  Sully has some good home cooking that day since the qualifier is at his home course Huntingdon Valley CC.

Steve,

Congratulations and good luck.

I'll be out there as a committeeman for sure and hopefully as a player--I try next week.

Ask for George as a caddie for your practice rounds, or even your competitive rounds. Knows every hump and bump on the course. Keeps up, talks only when you want advice and can really help you on the course.

Congrats and good luck.

Steve,
You shouldn't have any trouble understanding Bandon Dunes,
some lay up holes, and you need to realize which hole locations are best attacked from what angle. Pins really affect the strategy. Look for backstops during practice

I have only played Bandon Trails once. That course really needs to be disected backwards and watch for the odd rollouts. Spend most of your practice time here, as that is the course which I think determines which players make it to match play.

We have an annual meeting of the USGA Mid-Amateur Committee and during the week we are the volunteers who serve as rules officals for the championship.  I'll walk with a group during stroke play and then depending on seniority (and who can walk) I will referee some matches.

It's a lot of fun.  Last year Austin Eaton who won the Mid-AM and who was new to the committee walked along as my observer in one of the matches--he's a great guy.  He had just lost his match or maybe didn't qualify for match play and wanted to tag along.

Good luck again to those of you qualifying this week. I really hope some of you join me in the tournament. Only 25 days until I head to OMG (Oregon's Mecca of Golf).

Good luck!

As I used to live in Cincinnati, I just checked out the scores. Steve left something out. Not only did he make it through in a playoff, he had to beat mid-am regular Robert Gerwin in the playoff.

Very strong, Steve.

Now go have some Skyline for me.

Rob and I went to the same high school but he's about 8 years older than me. I met him for the first time a few days before the qualifier in the practice round. Rob has made numerous Ams and Mid-Ams. He's made it to the Sweet 16 in the Am at least once I think. And he shot a 59 in his club championship (Camargo) a few years ago.
