Langston Legacy GC - Washington D.C.
« on: August 21, 2007, 08:28:59 PM »
I came across this course's website which mentions that there is a project underway to bring the course up to championship conditions.

Has anyone ever played the course?  It seems to be on a nice piece of property and other than East Potomac (which I'd like to hear about as well) you can't get much closer to downtown.  What could the course be with some TLC?  Given its unique place in history could it ever end up being the host site for The National?

A little TLC would help.  The conditioning at Langston is always bad.  I have not been there in over two years, but after speaking with folks that have, little has been done to renovate the course.  It never gets the same attention or resources as Hains Point (East Potomac Park)--which might be a good thing given that a contracted maintenance company recently sprayed Round Up instead of fertilizer on all the greens at East Potomac .

The design at Langston is nothing special, but it's not horrible.  Folks in town are really hoping that Tiger chooses Langston as the site for his East Coast learning center.  It would make a great deal of sense given Langston's history and Tiger's involvement in the AT&T National.

As for hosting Tiger's tournament, I don't see that hapenning.  It would take a total redesign and a ton of money.  It plays to about 6,600 yards now from the back tees.  I'm not sure if there is enough land there to stretch it out to a Tour length course.

Langston is one of those places where the design history is very shrouded.   If memory serves it was opened in 1937 and I'm sure WPA labor was involved.

In fact, it's pretty amazing how much WPA labor was involved in building municipal golf courses across the country during the 30s.

The Forgotten History of DC’s First Golf Course for African AmericansYou didn't need a police escort to play there. You might see a celeb. Langston's long-timers reflect on the first fairways in Washington where they felt like insiders.

For those who are unaware, the National Links Trust is an organization started by Michael McCartin and Will Smith whose mission is "PROMOTING AND PROTECTING AFFORDABILITY, ACCESSIBILITY AND ENGAGING GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTURE AT MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Their first project is focused on the three munis in D.C.: East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek. Each one of these sites "has a rich and storied history, but are not currently living up to their full potential."

NLT is currently working on the RFP response that's due next month and recently announced that Tom Doak and Gil Hanse agreed to waive their design fees for East Potomac and Rock Creek restoration and renovations, respectively. They haven't announced who will restore/renovate Langston, but Smith said that doesn't need as much work as the other two. NLT also brought Troon and Mike Keiser on board as part of its bid team.

From what I can tell, the work these guys are doing is tremendous.
