Dornoch 2008
« on: July 31, 2007, 03:53:29 PM »
I am in the process of setting up a trip to Scotland that will include a stay in Dornoch the nights of June 9-13, leaving June 14th.

Anyone interested, let me know.  I think Brent Hutto has indicated strong interest.  We will have rooms in Dornoch for 8 and I think four of us from Pensacola will be going.

My question is after Dornoch.  Would it be feasible to fly into Inverness, rent vehicles, drive to Dornoch for the above stay, then drive to Nairn on getaway day, drive on to Cruden Bay the next day, and then drive on at St Andrews?  I'm just not sure of the driving times involved, and also if I can pick up cars in Inverness and drop off in Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Thanks for any advice.

Bill - I might be interested in going with you. The answer is "YES" to all of your travel questions. No problem with a one-way auto rental.

Bill,
David Tepper has a house for rent about 400 yards from the 1st tee at Dornoch. On our Painswick adventure a few years back I flew up to Aberdeen, played Murcar, drove up to Inverness and spent the night, then one hour or so to Dornoch. It is an easy drive from Dornoch to Cruden Bay, I woke up early 5-ish I think and then easily got in 36 at CB before heading back down to Aberdeen to drop off my car. From there I went old school and took the train down to St Andrews, and then on to North Berwick.
Your plan is definitely doable, it is just a matter of how much stamina your compadres have.

Great minds.  Hasn't Rihc already suggested Dornoch for BUDA VI?
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Bill:

As stated above it is very doable.

Click on the below link.  It is a driving distance calculator for driving in Europe, including the UK and Ireland, that, if anything, overestimates the driving times.

Hope this helps.

Panhandle Bill,

Frontrunning the BUDA again?

Or making a bid for organizer?

Mark (and Tony and Mark and Bill)

Dornoch is always on the table as a BUDA venue, if and when we can get a quorum on the issue.  Bill's dates probably wouldn't work for me, but you never know.  Early May is what I was thinking, last time this topic came up.

Bill - I did this exact trip last year and drove everything. It is easily doable. The drive from Inverness to Dornoch was about 1-1.5 hours. Pretty easy and not much traffic. We stayed at the Dornoch hotel and played both courses. We then drove to Nairn - maybe 2 hours. We played Nairn and the drove to Aberdeen. We drove through the Grampian Mountains. While the drive took a little longer (maybe 3 hours) I highly recommend it!!! The views and scenery are absolutely fantastic. Played Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay both of which were close to Norwood Hall where we stayed. After playing Royal Aberdeen we drove to St. Andrews again about a couple of hours. Played TOC, Jubliee, Crail and Craigshead. Then drove to Edinburgh to fly home. Played 36 every day but the day at Nairn since we drove about 5 hours that day.

Bill - as everybody else has said your trip is eminently doable.  I drove to Dornoch and back whilst staying in Nairn a couple of years ago - about an hour and a half for each journey. Nairn to Cruden Bay will be about 2 hours cross country and Aberdeen is about 30 minutes south of there.  The road from Aberdeen to Dundee is a fast dual carriageway (about an hour) and from there to St Andrews is about 20 minutes over the Tay Bridge.

Rich/Sean - May is also more preferable as a time slot for Buda for me but I appreciate that's a personal issue as I already have another golf trip each September.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Thanks for all the input.

May would be okay for me for the Buda if it's late May.  Is it possible to pin it down at this early date?  If not I will stick with the June dates I've already locked in.  I do have several guys from Pensacola who are hot to trot.  So to speak.  ;)

Bill if you suggest some dates and offer to help organize then you’ll quickly get an indication of whether or not a quorum exists.  Sounds like you’ve already got half the USA team.

w/c May 26th is a bank holiday and often half term week which would probably hit attendance.

I would love to say yea to Dornoch, but it will (probably) be too soon after a week I’m planning for April in Northern Ireland and Donegal. So for the moment I’m unfortunately a no.

Looks like May is not going to work for our group coming over in June.  We will be in Dornoch June 9-13, leaving the 14th.  Is there enough interest / flexibility amonst the usual suspects to stage the 2008 Buda Cup over those dates?

Not getting pushy, just asking.   Calm down there.  ;)

I probably could do the June dates if they were to be BUDA.  If however, BUDA were in May (either at Dornoch or elsewhere, I believe Saunton/Burnham has been floated as a possibility and Pennard's always on Sean's agenda) then I couldn't do both.

I'm sure we'll discuss BUDA VI in Leeds late September.  Your 6/13 date may be the rock upon which we build the 2008 church, or then again, it may not....

Enjoy, regardless!

Right, I am very enthusiastic about a first look at Dornoch.  If I get there with eight players, there will be some good matches even if it's not Buda!

I can think of nothing better than having my BUDA virginity pierced by the mighty love spear that is the links of Dornoch.

Say the word and I shall be there.

Yes. By a considerable margin.

I guess that means I'll settle for a bit of clumsy groping by Alwoodley this September.

Bumping this up to see if anyone else is interested.

Right now it looks like four nights in Dornoch, arriving Mon June 9, a night in Aberdeen with a round at Cruden Bay, then driving the morning of Saturday June 14th into St Andrews, flying home on Wednesday, June 18.

I have booked rooms for 8 in Dornoch and will suggest do-it-yourself in St Andrews as most have their favorite lodging.

Remind me of your plans (and give me some details--i.e. tee times) early in the new year.  Maybe we can develop something bigger (if you want) around your commitment.

Just back from Dornoch, BTW, and it was amazing how fast and firm the course was playing even in the face of constant "summer" rain.  The best some very good golfers could do in two rounds of qualifying was 150 (10 over).  One "scratch" golfer shot 98 (28 over) in the first round.

Damn--it was FUN!

I was quite surprised by the high qualifying scores.  The first day was certainly difficult with the wind, but I thought at least a few people would shoot close to par.  The second day was beautiful and there was hardly any wind at all when I played.  I looked on the board and this was the first time since 1986 that nobody broke 150 in Shield qualifying.  Prior to that is was sometime in the 1970s, and I think that was the only other time since they started playing 36 holes for qualifying.

The course was certainly firmer than in June, but not as firm as usual in August (certainly attributable to this year's weather that I've heard so much about).

Rich, will do.  I will be booking tee times at RD in early September.  Right now I'm thinking of 3 mornings at RD and one at Nairn, with afternoons elsewhere and a round at Cruden Bay on getaway day en route to St Andrews.

The days of play in Dornoch would be June 10-13.
