O/T Green intrusions & inappropriate ads
« on: July 22, 2007, 04:16:31 PM »
I shall probably be considered a curmudgeon for even suggesting it, but does anyone else agree with me that wives, mistresses, girl friends and children should be kept off the playing surface of the course at the end of play. Not only that but Mrs. Harrington couldn't even wait for the finale, she was barreling on with four players yet to play the eighteenth hole.

The PGA should  have put a stop to it when the ill fated wife of Fred Couples wrapped her legs around him in a Cialis dry run.

Speaking of Cialis, does it embarrass any of you parents to be viewing a sporting event such as the Open and have your child ask, "Daddy what is erectile disfunction?"

It shouldn't be embarrassing, as long as your wife doesn't have to be the one to give them the answer. ;)

Reminds me of years ago when all those Rogaine commercials first came out, and I never for the life of me could figure out what Rogaine was because the commercial wouldn't say what it was for. Didn't have the internet then, so I couldn't look it up--I was stumped for a long time until I finally asked someone what it was.

Regarding running out onto the 18th hole, I too would prefer that it not happen (you'll never see Elin running out there to Tiger although it will be interesting to see if they let Sam Alexis run to him when she is able to).

Do you have a wife and/or kids?  If so, do they visit you at work?  Should they ban that too?  The kid caused no delay in play or damage to the golf course.

Bob,

I had no problem with Paddy's wife and kid running out to greet him at the end. You talk about "inappropriate ads"...I had a problem with the tacky advertising directly behind the teebox(es).

Sean,

Yes, as a matter of fact, more than one ( at different times of course). I have four children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; did my children come to my office, in an emergency, possibly, but I never encouraged it. By the way, in a host of industries family members are banned from the premises.

I liked the gal in the Sergio ads. She could have run out all day for me ;D, hell, I'd even encourage her to streak
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

What if the wife / kids also streaked / flour-bombed? Where's the sense of tradition?

She delivers her line "There's nothing like a good up and down" with quite the degree of panache and suggestivity.  ;D

To me the occasion of winning a tournament seems to have become a nationally televised case of "keeping up with the Jones's"....or in this case, keeping up with the Mickelsons.

I'm not really old enough to remember the marquis players prior to the Faldo/Norman generation, but I surely don't recall anyone running laps around the green like little Evan Mickelson.

Seems that since Phil's kids came of age to congratulate daddy, everyone else brings em along, dresses them in their Sunday bests, and holds them back until just the right moment before sounding the bell and opening the starting gates.

I wonder what Sam Alexis, perhaps the most famous first/middle name combonation around, will be doing when she is 5 years old...will she be the new bear hugger?

I don't think its a question of crumudgeonness or a question of lack of sensitivity/heart...what I suppose rubs me the wrong way the most is that it just seems to have become the chic thing to do - show off thy wife and thy children - and the media eats it up and writes about what a well-rounded family man player X is able to be.

I adore having my daughter at work; it happens once or twice a year, but it's a great thing. These guys are on the road for 20-30 weeks a year. And you want to deny them, as hard as it is to win a major or a PGA Tour event, the chance for family to take part in it???

There's a great photo of Nicklaus holding one of his kids over his shoulder on the final green after a win.

She does not get a pass for fake boobs, sorry. Small naturals beat implants every time, Tiger (and Tiger!).

And yes, I'm with Bob; priapism and erection are not words for 8am-3pm broadcasts, sorry.

The one that comes immediately to mind (and that I was referencing when I wrote this) was Evan Mickelson after...I think...the Phoenix event 2-3 years ago...dressed to the nines, of course.  ;)

Bob,

Although the Cialis commercials obviously mention ED, listen to what the announcers say on air. It's something like:

"Today's telecast is brought to you by Buick, America's favorite automobile; Diet Dr. Pepper, tastes more like regular Dr. Pepper; and Cialis, proud sponsor of the PGA Tour."

Clearly somebody decided that describing Cialis' purpose was not appropriate for network TV....until it's time for commercials.

It saves having Mike Tirico or Jim Nantz telling us about it, anyway.

Greg, panache, suggestive, yes... but, given Serg's 18th hole performance, prophetic to the max!  :o

I would imagine a kid wouldn't pick up on a word like priapism, or erectile dysfunction, but they would be curious about "good up and downs".

But, I agree, that the family should save the kodak moments for in the scoring trailer or somewhere not around the green, particularly when others are waiting to use the green.

In fact, Sergio is getting heat and suggestion that he is just whining because he said it isn't easy being in this position, and waiting for what he characterized for 15 minutes for the green to clear so he could hit his approach.  If it were even a few minutes, it is wrong if not unfair for him to have to wait like that under this type of competitive pressure.  When that was spoken of, they also cut to a caddie still raking a bunker while Sergio waited.  I'm not going to be harsh on Sergio if he is bitching about that.  I think he has a case.

Well, I remember reading about a poll recently where they found men would rather play golf than have sex.  Perhaps they did some more research on that and figured out the reason why men would say something so stupid, and are targeting their ads at the golfers now that they've found the reason why! 8)

I'm no fan of kids running on like this. However, I think Mrs Harrington played a canny game here.  Harrington was gutted coming off 18, he thought he'd thrown away the Open Championship.  His little boy knew none of this and will have immediately distracted Harrington from his thoughts.  Watching him practice putting while his son tried to kick his balls into the hole just reinforced my belief that this interruption helped get Harrington in the right mood for the play-off.

I don't think Harrington's son had anything at all to do with the delay Garcia encountered.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Still, you've got to give them credit for working the word "proud" in there. That's pretty subtle word play.

I am challenging Tiger and Sammie to a match against me and my son Jason in 5 years - if he doesn't show, I win in a walkover!

I wouldn't really blame anyone for celebrating his or her time in the spotlight, though I would say it should not be done when there are still golfers coming in.

As for the commercials, seems like we lost whatever good sense we had regarding decorum a long time ago. We are worse for having done so. I blame all you guys who grew up in the 60s. :)

The fact that there is a commercial running during daylight hours which discusses "erections lasting over 4 hours" is more than a bit absurd. And I don't think anyone has ever called me a prude.
