Did you know...

Dev Emmet was paid a princely sum of $150/month to design Congressional Blue.  The course originally featured two par 6 holes at the beginning of each nine.

To comprehend that the Tiger folks put this tournament together in just a few months is mind boggling.  Congrads to his foundation for assembling such a talented staff.  JC

I would also add that admission is free for active duty military, thanks to Tiger.  Tickets from Pentagon MWR have been moving very briskly.

JC,
Any chance you could share with us some of the trials and tribulations of pulling off the job you have pulled off?

I'd second Adam's request. From the one article I read, it sounds like Greg McLaughlin has done a wonderful job (even assuming that he was given all the resources he could possibly need to do it).  With Congressional's needs on the one hand and a justifiably demanding Tiger Woods on the other, it must've been a real pressure cooker for him.

Adam/Peter - sorry to imply I was part of the success!  I'm a chairman but still just a volunteer.  I was talking about Greg and his 8 staff from the foundation that he uprooted from CA and brought to DC to work 16+ hours a day for 100 days to pull this off.

I'll be at Congo 12 hours a day Tue-Sun and will be able to post very little.  In fact the first I'll see of the course is when I don a tie and AT&T blazer and am stood like a manakin behind the 18th green with the other chairmen at 7pm Sunday for the awards ceremony.

Has the new 18th/10th been built yet or is that happening after this tournament?

I'm going to be out there on Sunday.  For those interested in how the TWF folks pulled this thing together so quickly, the Post ran a great article on this subject a day or two ago.  I have linked it below:

The old par 3 #18 has  been reversed. The new tee is on the hill near the snack bar. The tee shot ranges from 150 yards to 220 yards downhill over a pond to a shallow green. The hole is being played as #10. The old #17 will serve as the finishing hole.

I am going on July 4th, pro-am day. Will the pro-am pairings and tee times be announced ahead of time?

Rob,

How would you say the new 10th compares to the old 18th in terms of difficulty?  Similar contours/green design?

Great party with Tiger last night.  Bush 41, military flyover and proam went swimmingly until late this afternoon when thunderboomers ran everybody off the course and to the bar.

Daly just drove 1000 miles from Ark to fill in for a withdrawal -shapes of Crooked Stick or shades of his previous (not so successful) visit to Congo?

Doug

The new hole is significantly longer and plays downhill. It provides more "bailout" options left and right than the old hole.  The routing is still awkward since there is a long walk back to the new #11 tee after playing #10. The finishing hole also leaves you stranded on the opposite side of the lake from the clubhouse. The membership is not convinced that they received much for their $900,000.

If I were a member and given the option to tee off #10 instead of #1 I might have second thoughts.

Teeing off number 10 as a first hole of the day is the stuff of Lewis Grizzard nightmares!

Interesting stat for Tiger: yesterday he hit 78% of greens and shot 73.  Today he hit 72% of greens and shot 66.

OMG! Ogilvy wet, love left, beem long. It set a really bad tone for the day for that trio. Ogilvy dunked another on 11 - brutal 2 hole stretch! - and four putted 14. But the worst may have been love's ugly jerk from inside two feet on his second putt at 12. He four putted...

Jonathan, I looked0but sorry I missed you.

How long is the hike from new #10 green to what must now be #11? (old #10)

Bill, for the pros it is a bit of a walk, from the edge of the green to the way backs it's prob a good 50-60 yards. And most of that is walking backwards.

WOW did anyone just catch Golf Channel fading out their telecast as Tiger's 3-footer for birdie on #9 was halfway to the hole?

Apparently they still have some production issues.

They also had a lot of "ghost voices", mostly Peter Kostis talking about Tiger's shots when Tiger wasn't on screen.

I admit they aren't great but it's better than the alternative. Imagine life these days without the golf channel.

TGC has an asset in Faldo. Johnny Miller has grown on me over the years, but he has become very one dimensional talking about pressure and choking.

Faldo, on the other hand is provides much more color and analysis. Even if he does occasionally act smarmy and respond to questions by saying, "your right" - effectively calling out his partners for lobbing softballs at him.
