lololol please help us compare these two projects by the brothers Jones. I give Jones JR and Chambers Bay a slam dunk win 10 and 8 over Torrey Pines South redo and Sand Pines put together.

Sand Pines is a perfect 10...well, I am going by the disaster scale of course.
I've never played TP.

But I've been and to and played Chambers a few times, and well, it is pretty darn good.  Its gazillions times better than Sandpines.

I don't think John has played the Torrey redux either.  The week I played he and his co-horts simply sipped wine and postulated from the porch.  If Torrey has any faults they can be blamed on a Bell and not a Jones.

Barney, I did ride the TP south after cocktails with Gib and then discussed it at length with the owner of the Lodge. I dare to say my comparison will hold up after I have played Chambers Bay next week. Brother Jones west coast style trumps Brother Jones east coast style 10 and 8.

On what basis and in what context could I make a valid comparitive analysis between two golf courses when I've never seen one of the courses ?

I regret not having played TP before and after, or Chambers Bay.

All too often we get caught up in comparitive analysis where the course that comes out behind is viewed as an inferior golf course.

A golf course that I've been playing for 50+ years in NJ isn't ranked/rated on any list, but, it's one of the most enjoyable courses to play, day in and day out.  I never tire of it, it's always enjoyable, irrespective of my scores.

I don't know about you or anyone else, but, If I had to play Sand Pines on a daily basis, I'd be a happy camper.

It's a good golf course and has the added element of being swept by the wind, regularly.  What could be bad about playing it day in and day out ?

Perhaps some have become elitists or enraptured with fantasy golf.

But, for me, I would be happy to play golf on Sand Pines for the rest of my life.

Naturally, I'm sure I'd have a few suggestions with respect to improving the course, like moving the water towers, which is more expensive and more complicated than moving MacDonald's gates at NGLA.   But, I'd enjoy every round that I was lucky enough to play.

Something tells me that you would too.

Respectfully, I find your position reduces discussing the artform of golf course architecture to the lowest common denominator.

Indeed a day golfing at Sandpines beats a day digging ditches.
