John Hurley

GCA legend long John Hurley held on to win the NE State Match Play 11 and 10.  He carded 5 birdies, 2 eagles and no lost shots in the final.

I believe he endured a so so Frosh season at Texas AM, not making the traveling team for several matches.  So a nice summer confidence restorer.  Cheers, Tom

He won the Neb match play championship 11 and 10??

I thought the finals was 18 holes.

Whatever, congratulations Long John. I think I owe you a call anyway. Sorry I'm such a procrastinator.

I've seen some people bomb it in my time but nothing quite like Long John Hurley. Last time I checked the USGA tech center still hadn't seen anything quite as long as what they saw from Long John Hurley at Merion either. He even offered to go to Far Hills and be tested personally. They didn't take him up on it. Maybe they just couldn't bear to see something like that again.

Final was 36 holes.  He shot 63 the first round and was 12 under when he ended the match with another birdie.  Course apparently was 6800+ yards, with CR of 73.3 according to Golf Link.  

Hurley shot 64 at Wild Horse, as this info from Texas A&M states...

"BEFORE A&M: Two-time Nebraska state high school champion (2004 and 2005)...finished second at state tournament in 2006...qualified for the 2005 and 2006 U.S. Amateurs...the only player in history to earn Nebraska Amateur of the Year and Junior Golfer of the Year in the season season (2005)...qualified for the 2003 U.S. Junior Championship and won the 2004 PGA Junior Series...won an incredible 31 high school tournaments...posted a 69.3 scoring average as a senior...carded an eight-under-par 64 at the 2005 Nebraska Match Play Championship at Wild Horse Golf Club, setting course record....round included a hole-in-one...coached in high school by Danny Fernau."

It was fun watching Hurley miss the putt for a 63 at Wild Horse... then still getting the course record with the 64.  The tee ball was just incredibly long and right in the throat of the green approach.  

Funny, I think it was the same year, that I went to watch the Palmer cup at the Irish Course at Whistling STraits, and followed JB Holmes around just prior to him turning pro.  I'd like to see those two Johns square off on a wide f&f course like Wild Horse, or even the likes of Chambers Bay from the way backs!  ;) ;D :o

He shot 78 and survived a 13 for 2 spot playoff just to get into match play.

RJ -- add Bubba and Tiger and you have a great foursome that millions would watch on TV.
