What is the USGA's Policy on WDs??
« on: June 05, 2007, 05:42:21 PM »
did anyone notice all the pros that only played one round yesterday??  Daly shoots 73 and leaves....and a guy who shot 73 in the 1st round shot 64 and made the field

It just seems guys like Ogilvie, Daly, Dudley Hart, Hank Kuehne do this all the time?? and what happened to Mark Brooks...shoots 68 and WDs too?

and the USGA cannot be happy about the 185 shot by someone in the Washington Sectional...94/91  :o....OUCH!

Michael:

Keep in mind this -- the person in Washington State either earned their spot for the sectional through local qualifying which speaks to the issue of the person's golf skills -- the person may have had a very bad day -- simple as that. The second is that the person may have earned a sectional qualifier because of being exempt from locals. I don't know which applied but the situation you are attempting to point out has a good bit of difference to what was done by Michelle Wie and the accompanying rule that applies to her involvement with LPGA events.

P.S. One other thing -- if I'm not mistaken those players who play at the Locals and fail to return a score within the rating guidelines set by the USGA can have future applications for such events turned down. I believe this is still handled through the able hands of Tony Zirpoli.

94-91 was Jeff Barnhart, the professional at Settlers Bay, Wasilla AK. Prior to Settlers Bay he was a professional at the Palmer GC, where the Alaska Regional was held. He led that field of 16 in patchy conditions.
The inked article indicated it was a Tin Cup like performance and a playing companion said he was definitely an underdog.

In Local qualifying for the US Open, WDs can be turned in along with scores that are too high.

In Sectional Qualifying, there is no penalty for WDs.  The officials in charge may even be somewhat pleased with it as it makes it easier to complete the 36 holes in one day.

At least he finished and didn't withdraw after the 94.  Traveling all the way from Alaska, I don't blame him.  Playing is better than going to the airport and waiting standby.   :)
