Sunningdale New, 6-10
« on: June 04, 2007, 10:43:24 PM »
I had the good fortune to play Sunningdale's Old and New courses last week.  After my round I spent a few minutes looking through the club history book in the clubhouse and quickly read about the changes Simpson made to Colt's original holes six through ten.  Apparently the current ninth tee used to be the sixth tee and the 10th green was the original 10th green but was approached from another angle.  The current sixth (which I think is great), seventh, and eighth holes were completely new.

I didn't have time to go over the details in the book.  Does anyone have more information about the original holes?

Andrew

The club history does a resonable job of following the chnages to those holes.  I believe very little of Simpson's work remains.  Colt and Morrison had the last laugh with a final redo in the 30s.

The original Colt holes were thought to be too hilly and I'm not sure if the club has any original photos of these. But I did find this fuzzy one of the 7th which looks to be a great hole even with the stiff climb.  (I've also seen pics of the original 8th and 9th but haven't copied these yet)

I'm confused.

Colt designs New.
Simpson changes Colt's 6th through 10th.
Colt changes Simpson's changes.
Back to Colt's original 6th through 10th? To new holes unlike those he originally designed?

Thanks Paul.  Do you know what direction this seventh hole ran?

I'd like to see the pictures of the eighth and ninth if you can get them posted too.
