Geoff's Quote 6/3/07
« on: June 03, 2007, 10:34:59 PM »
I recently asked Geoff Shaq if there was anyway he could provide a comments section on his quotes of the day. He replied that there was some sort of technical/archival reason why that would be problematic.

So, here is the first attempt to discuss the oft poignant quotes.

Quote
I go to great lengths to avoid deception – making a shot look one way when actually it plays another way. JACK NICKLAUS

Having been blessed with watching a special "Fedex Cup" segment on JN and his designs earlier today, I just can't seem to swallow one more of his pontifications.

The above quote seems awefully weird.

Comments on the quote...?

sounds like what many pros want out of a course Adam:  that it be fair, all out front of you

199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Adam,

Do you really think that's a surprising quote from Jack?

I've been playing a number of his courses in recent years (expecting to play a few more shortly), and although I think his design philosophy has improved considerably in recent years, I would still say that he is very much a fellow who lays it out quite clearly in front of you.

In other words, what you see is what you get and I can't think of a single Nicklaus hole I've ever played where visual trickery played a part.

Sounds like Jack is honest.

Sounds like Jack is honest.

It's true, he is.

Today Trevino said Jack was the greatest ever, easily. Jack honestly admitted it was true! Listening to those two, I realized just how modest they both were. [Guess how 'modest' that is  ;)]

Has anyone played Morningside C.C. in Palm Desert? I did, almost forty odd years ago. The best feature on the course was the Mens Rest Room, gold faucets and a quick flush all done by sensors.

The line to the green was across rough that just about prevented anyone but Nicklaus to clear, but pity the poor schmucks in the general membership.

I don't know whether the club was ever a great success.

Doug -- the greatest golfer ever, or the greatest architect ever?  Or both?

I've heard Lee say Tiger would kick everyone's butt from his (Lee's) day.  He said Jack might give Woods some competition, but IIRC he didn't see even Jack on the same level.
