Best holes that can be seen from a major highway?
« on: May 23, 2007, 11:37:33 AM »
I made the long haul from Austin to Charlotte this past weekend and welcomed the occasional golf course sighting along the way.

It got me thinking, what are the best holes that can be seen from a major highway (or other busy road)?  Growing up in KY, I appreciated the shots of the par 5 9th at Big Spring CC in Louisville (in the winter) and the par 4 17th at Old Silo in Mt. Sterling.

If 17-mile Drive counts as a major freeway, I think it might be somewhat high on the list!!  :)

What holes exactly can be seen from 17-mile?  My only trip along it was about ten years ago and I can't recall much.

BTW the holes I mentioned in the original post can be seen from I-64.

David - 17 Mile Drive goes alongside each of

Spanish Bay
Dunesy holes at Spyglass
both MPCC courses
Cypress Point
then winds through a part of Pebble Beach

I have to agree that if one can stretch the definition to call the road a "major highway", it will be unrivalled in this category.

 ;D

Outside of that, here in the SF Bay Area, our truly major highways do skirt a lot of golf courses.  Some you can see holes on, most have trees blocking the view.  I know going south from SF on I-280 one gets a great view of a fine looking uphill par 4 at California GC... that would seem to me to be our best candidate around here, for a hole that can be seen in its entirety from a truly major thoroughfare....

If we simply use public roads as a standard then there are no better views than those at NGLA, Shinnecock and Maidstone - then again, those aren't views since you're right in the middle of the course.

Not sure if it's the very best, but holes 2-5 at Perry Maxwell's Twin Hills (edit, not OKC) in Oklahoma City are right up against I-35, in full view, and they're all pretty good holes.

Rich, those too sprung immediately to mind.  I could list many others.  But he asked for the BEST holes.

Agreed on 17 mile drive, I don't think anything can touch this.

You can also see a few holes of San Francisco golf club from Hwy 1...

And heaven forbid, don't leave out Las Positas in Livermore..   ;D

The par-five sixth at Rod Whitman's Wolf Creek in Alberta is seen from highway 2, connecting Edmonton and Calgary.

The A198, unimpeded views of Kilspindie, Luffness New, all three courses at Gullane, (tiny view of the 18th green at) North Berwick) and the Glen.

It might not be a major highway, but you certainly wouldn't be able to tell from the speed of the cars on the road.

I think David's intent of the question had to do with interstate-type (limited-access) highways (motorways/autobahns, whatever), such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which bisects Oakmont (although I don't know if you can actually see any of the course from it).

Otherwise, where are all the nominations for 16-18 at Wake Forest GC, seen from U.S. 1?   ;D :P:

That was my thought. If the road doesn't have a sign like these (or their Euro/Asia/Aussie counterpart) I don't think we need bring it up here

Scott--You're right about my intent in the original post, though I did open it up somewhat when I mentioned "other busy road(s)."

I've driven on the PA Turnpike many times but never the Oakmont stretch--had no idea it bisected the course.

Holes 15-18 & #1 of Bethpage Black from Round Swamp Road. Drive on it between 4 & 6 pm and then try and convince me that it isn't a "major" road.

This group has a rather liberal definition of "major highway"!

It should at least have a number...

BTW, I thought of Primm as well, but it's the Lakes Course that's close to the freeway. All the holes on the Lakes course are bordered by mounds and trees, so no, you can't see it other than mounds and trees.

The bay area contingent has to include the mighty links of Sunol off the 680 in their best of category ;).

You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?
