The Longest Hole?
« on: May 07, 2007, 03:20:03 PM »
I just talked to Laura with Forbes Traveler who is looking for a definitive answer the  question, "What's the longest golf hole in the world?"

She says she's interested in hearing about anything over 700 yards that's actually being played.

If you well-traveled architecture buffs have a candidate, post it here or send it to her at forbestraveler@gmail.com

She's looked at those, and discovered that not all of them have actually been built yet.

Meadow Farms appears to be a front-runner.

Re Meadows farms, The wash post did a piece on how to play it, complete with graphic.

Not only is the hole odd, so is the governance / biz model. It's owned by a nursery and if you spend a certain amount in the nursery, you get a free round!

This is a cool thread and raises an interesting question.  If a one of the 9s has an extra par 3 instead of a par 4, why not put in a par 6 as well for some intersting variety?

I think the hole at Chocolay Downs is going to open next spring and be a double dog-leg 1,006 yard hole:

I'm relatively certain Satsuki has the longest hole currently in play in the world.  The hole at Meadows Farms is the longest in the U.S.

I have played the Meadows Farms hole on several occasions--my father is friends with the owner.  It 's a very odd design.  The two water hazards often require you to layup on one or two of the shots.  I hate the hole personally.  It was built solely to generate press for the golf course.

The entire course could likely serve as a poster child for tacky architecture.  The same course features a par 3 with a green perched on top of a waterfall and another par 3 that includes a baseball diamond with bases and an outfield fence behind the green replete with signage.

As Mark pointed out, the owner of the course runs a chain of nurseries in the Northern Virginia area.  To his credit, the owner spends a great deal of time at the course and makes it a point to ask people about their experiences.  He has also kept greens fees well below the average for that area.  The guy is a real character.  He even sells a biography about himself in the clubhouse entitled "Nearly Perfect."

The new nine at Chocolay, and its 1,007 yard hole, are still in the planning stages, probably 3 years away according to the management.
The new owners are assessing their options.

There is course being constructed in North Korea that will have a 1,004-yard par-7 , called Diamond CC .

I am sure they will stretch it a little .

This is the same course that is building a funnel green par3 , for special occasions .

Like when Kim Jong Il plays it .
