Matt, San Clemente is not a bad course to call home. As Jon Spaulding can attest, it's a neat old Bell, Sr. and Jr. design. I never have a problem getting on. Tommy, you need to come down and play that course.

One of my good friends, who frequented Pelican Hills weekly, has been aghast since the course(s) have been closed.

So today he calls me and tells me he is playing Monarch, and the first thing that goes through my head is, Wow, is this guy hard up! He then starts going into detail how Monarch isn't as good as Pelican and by this time, I'm like, "Mike, please................"

Sounds like your friend Mike has what we like to call "quality problems" on the financial side and mental issues on the golf side.

I am continually amazed how they serve up this tripe for $150-200 and people stand in line to eat. The back 9 there has to be one of the worst of all time. I can walk to Monarch but would prefer to drive & play an interesting course.

Well lets just put it this way, he lives in a pretty cool modern looking, all-glass, quad-level in Belmont Heights, right on Marine Stadium. (Built on one of those small lots. The only place to go was up) He bought a brand new 32' sport fisherman last year to cruise around the harbor there (I begged him not to) and drives a new car every 8-10 months.

All this at 39 years old.

And yes, he works in the money markets.......

He was a member at Friendly Hills, but sold that last year because he wasn't using it enough. He would rather be playing on the ocean. (I begged him not to join Friendly, but he didn't listen either, and now says, I was right)(Unfriendly Hills)

Mike is the epitome of Golf in SoCal, more specifically in O.C.

I've golfed with him and his friends from his work on many occasions, and it's all Fazio is King, golf carts, GPS systems, cigars, cell phones and pencils with erasers on them!

I had my interview in Newport on Thursday - on 3 hours sleep, eek - and I'll find out this week whether they like me or not. I was so tired I barely remember what I said to them. I don't think I was a complete idiot though.

I reconnected with a pro friend who lives around Irvine and competes in Asia. He plays out of Arroyo Trabuco, so I guess that would be the place to go. Maybe someday he'll make it big, join Shady Canyon, and then invite me. That would be nice.

If I had my choice, I'd stay here in San Francisco or at least nearby but I'm not exactly swimming in great job offers. I'll let you all know what happens.

Of course upon playing Shady, you'd be crucified by all the anti-Fazios on the site.....

Arroyo is an enjoyable course, but I can see better players like you getting very bored with it. It's also $100 on the weekend now.

Just to let you know, I find Shady Canyon to be an adequate Fazio course, probably my favorite of that ilk.

I am not, and will never be a member of the anti-Fazio camp. Most everything I've played of his has been good or great.
