But any occassional outburst short of that is not a big deal.
However,
I make my living on live TV. And if I dropped a G**D*****,I'd be quickly sacked.

But Nicklaus practically never swore on the golf course, and Jones learned to control his temper when he was 20.  If those are the guys Tiger wants to surpass, he's got some work left.

Thank you, Tom...I was beginning to feel pretty lonely.  I'm 56 and grew up watching Nicklaus, Palmer, Casper, Player, Watson, et al.  It just seems to me that they handled themselves much better on the golf course.  I always wondered what it would be like to be on the other side of the generation gap.  Now I know.

GD, MF, etc., are unfortunately a sign of the times and it is even sadder to me that it's considered "no big deal".

Nicklaus saw a picture of himself with a cigarette in his mouth in early 1960"s and never smoked on the golf course again which I bet was difficult because he was not an occasional smoker.I cant cuss in court.Trial work often feels like a series of four putts.

Passion for the game that's resulting in record books being rewritten. His respect for the game is off the charts -- He never just mails a round in. Whether he's up by 10 shots or down by 10 shots, he gives it total effort. He needs to control his temper? Man, his competitors are just hoping he loses it enough that it actually impacts his game negatively. I've yet to see that happen!

Did no one else hear what Tiger yelled at his ball as it approached #13 on Sunday, or like me were they so caught up in the moment that what he said seemed completely natural?

And the "Honestly what the hell just happened there?" as his approach found the bunker on #17.

Regarding the fact that people rarely if ever heard Nicklaus and Palmer say such things, for one thing they weren't mic'ed up, and for another I think it has more to do with an overall change in the language of the generations than it does bad manners on the golf course.  Doesn't the under 40 crowd of today swear more than the under 40 crowd of the 60s and 70s did?

He skipped them both.  Pretty poor on his part.  I'm he sure he thinks it's like root canal win or lose, but he should show up.  I'm sure Nike wants to get the 'Swoosh" as much airtime as possible.

It's not really the words that bother me [heck, we all have sworn on the golf course, in some way, at some time...].

It's when I see him, or any other tour pro [this post isn't entirely aimed at Tiger] turn around after a bad shot and absolutely slam their club into the turf. They know they are on live national/international TV, and yet they do it anyway.

I can still recall seeing Bill Rogers in the Hawaiian Open some 20+ years ago, slam a wedge into the middle of the fairway so hard that his caddie had to put down his golf bag and yank at the club with both hands to extricate it from the turf. Then, after putting out on the green with Hale Irwin, getting a big-time glare from Irwin as the two left the green, as if Irwin was saying "if I ever see you do something stupid like that again..."

Mike, as mentioned previously Nicklaus gave up smoking and also lost weight for the sake of his image.  I believe Palmer also gave up smoking.  Also, keep in mind that smoking was much more prevalent in the '60s.  Smoking, also is not related to etiquette unless you blow smoke in your opponents face or place the butt on the green.

As the thread has progressed, I would reiterate that Tiger's cursing is what motivated me to start this thread.  If that was it tho I would probably give him a pass.  It is his whole act, especially the undercut boxer punch after a big putt, that I find objectionable.  Fair or not i would also hold the stars to a higher standard of conduct and Tiger is the biggest of the stars.

What's wrong with an adrenaline-fueled, emotional fist pump?  I could see if he landed it on a guy, but to my knowledge that has never occurred.

What would you rather see him do?

What makes Tiger who he is is the passion and energy he brings to the game.  Getting pumped up is part of it all, and openly showing emotions as they occur is great in my opinion, so long as that emotion isn't channeled into a violent rage.

Did seeing Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus toss their putter in the air after a dramatic winning putt upset you too?  Surely that's far more dangerous an act...

Brian...Nicklaus typically would under swing his putter into the air in jubilation.  I believe that is the natural reaction for most of us.  There is no other golfer that I am aware of that fist pumps like Tiger.  To me it is an in your face move and simply not good etiquette.  In the NFL when players taunt or 'dance' in the end zone is that also just showing emotion or poor sportsmanship?

Frankly, I wish Tiger showed more emotion on the course.  It is only when he sinks a winning putt in the 4th round that you see the fist pumping.  At the same time, I would hardly criticize him for keeping focused and not being overly emotional till the end.
