treehouse opinions pls..London golf bookstore
« on: March 28, 2007, 11:41:25 AM »
We will be in London for 2 short days next week, while in transit to visit our daughter spending a semester abroad.

London certainly has top flight bookstores, BUT are there any that might have a strength with the depth of their golf offerings?

Cheers

Scott there was a thread on this a couple of months ago where someone said they had picked up a new Confidential Guide last year for £35 :o.

It may not be a coincidence that the store has since shut; but it was the only specialist sports bookshop. However following that I did do a trawl through the second hand stores on Charring Cross rd between Leicester SQ and Tottenham court RD and picked up a number of interesting volumes for reasonable prices.  There's also Foyle's in that stretch and a Borders and they will have some books you won’t see in the US.  Also Foyle's is worth a visit just to see the maddest payment system in the world and a chaotic store layout (haven’t been in 5 years so hopefully it hasn't changed one little bit.)

So good luck and Imp me if there's time for a game.

Scott - the bookshop downstairs in Selfridges had the Paul Daley books and a few other interesting coffe table type golf books as I remember. Foyles is worth visiting as Tony says, although it has certainly tidied itself up in recent years. I think it was owned for many years by one elderly lady, who liked things done her way and was reluctant to change...bit like The Addington I suppose. It hasn't lost all its character yet, so hopefully the golf course won't either.

I like Waterstones' flagship store on Piccadilly, too. Haven't looked at golf books there, but judging by the selection of food items, I think they'd have a few.

I would echo Tony's comments that you are best concentrating on the Charing Cross Road area. There are a number of second hand bookshops there, none of which specialise in golf books, but most carry a selection.  I was down in London last month and picked up a few bargains. Sadly I did not see any copies of The Confidential Guide for £35 :(
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

When I was last in London in 1992 there was an all sports book shop near the Charing Cross Road neighborhood.  This shop had a large selection of very good golf books.

Bill,

That would have been SportsPages. Sadly it is no more.
