North Shore CC is located less than 1 mile from Engineers overlooking Hempstead Harbor on the North Shore of LI.

Let the debate begin.  We have alot of information that leans toward Robert White as the original architect.  White also designed "prototype" holes much like Raynor and MacDonald.
White was Supt. and wrote of the construction methods used at North Shore.

Oops. I thought this was about North Shore CC in Glenview, Ill., where Johnny Goodman was the last amateur to win the U.S. Open (1933). Maybe someone can add "New York" to the top post.

I have a copy of the Met Golfer article on North Shore. The club occupies the land of the former Glenwood CC, founded in 1911 and opened in 1912.  North Shore, an offshoot of The Harmonie Club, acquired the property in 1914 and in 1915 hired Tillinghast to revise the "inadequate" Glenwood course. He retained only 5 holes from the existing 18, including the present 8th,which was among the original 9.  The article states, "it is said that 1000 trees were felled to give the 16th its dogleg configuration. Tillinghast's fee, construction included, amounted to $75,000. The course played at 6365 yards when it opened in May, 1916 and has undergone relatively little change over the years."

I presume White was the original architect of Glenwood.

One of the cool things about this course is that there are template holes, and Tilly original holes.  This is a very fun course to play.  It might fall into the hidden gem category.
