'17' on St Andrews Castle
« on: March 26, 2007, 01:41:39 PM »
I'm looking for help...

a friend of mine has sent a photo of #17 on the Castle course...I am unable to post the picture, but would like to share...if someone will IM me with an email address, I'll be glad to forward so that it can be shared...it was sent me by Colin Gerald, who is one of the caddies at the Old Course(if you need a good caddie there, Colin is..)

in his words, "the Castle course looks special. .they are trying to get the course to replicate what a Links course was like 150-200 years ago...it looks really difficult...the 17th hole from the tips, adrive of over 200 yards across a ravine with the wind blowing to the sea..."

I look forward playing one day..

Here's the photo of The Castle #17 that Joe sent:

What are the white things sticking out of the ground on the left side of the photo?

They look like protective wraps around some small plants to me.

They are rabbit protection for some bushes that were planted.

I have several pictures of the Castle Course that I took last July, including one that's almost identical to this one.

I might be able to get them up this evening.

'Rabbit protection' indeed.
They are Haggis nests. Reputedly, Haggis only nest in the finest of fescues. When the mammy haggis gives birth, the littl'uns come shooting out of the tube like a mini Evel Knievel. It's quite a sight.

Looks a bit like #16 at Bandon Dunes.  Anyone else see the similarity?

James,
as delightful as that thought is, it is also a condition of the restraining order that I remain sober on weeknights. ;)

Kelly Blake Moran and I had a good wander round the Castle yesterday. The grow-in from last years hydroseeding is looking wonderful and the greensites will be great fun to play, but there looked to me to be a helluva lot of rough-shaped boulder clay still around (maybe a third to a half of the site). I hope we have a good growing season!

Is this a mama, or a young'un?  And how do they get the Neeps & Tatties on top?

KMoum,
that one looks big enough to be a DADDY!

And obviously being consumed at one of our finer eateries. (Like our golf courses, you normally never find extraneous shrubbery adorning Haggii).

I think you're just down the street from it... The Dunvegan.

I'd blame the shrubbery on the Americans who frequent the place.

That is definitely upscale scrapple with maple syrup.  Everyday scrapple is burned with ketchup.

They are gorse bushes that have been planted (inside those white tubes).

The course looks like it has parents comprising Cape Kidnappers and Painswick, with a St Andrews schooling!  It is a unique place, and not overly pleasant in a 20 knot Noth-east wind with small elements of sleet.  I enjoyed the wwalk and was glad the golf will be a bit less exposed this afternoon.

The course is expected to open in 2008, and they are taking bookings from September 2007.  I hope thay have a great growing season.
