Name the course/architect (pics, clues, aerial, Solved!)
« on: March 22, 2007, 10:40:23 AM »
I've been meaning to post this pic for a while.  It's not too easy unless you've been there.

Course/architect?

I'll post a couple more from here later.

I'll guess Dick Wilson, and somewhere in North Carolina...

Looks like New England to me, maybe New Hampshire or Maine. Stiles/Van Kleek?

It is very similar to the first hole at White Bear Lake Yacht club,  but I think the background is different.  I will guess Ross.

Don't know, but methinks once upon a time the green surface was a whole lot larger...

New England, certainly, kind of reminds me of Rutland (Stiles)

I was also thinking Stiles and Van Kleek.  However, I do not think that it is Rutland.  That green does not remind me of any that I remember there.  I wish I still had all my digital picks of it at work.

Brad,
This hole looks exactly like the 8th at Shepard Hills GC in Roxbury, NY, although it probably isn't as no one at SH seems to know who built their course.
I think it was either Jay Gould or his daughter who was responsible for its construction.

No winners as of yet....neither architect nor course/facility has been mentioned...

I will say it's in the Northeast... :)
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I sure like the way the second or third (?) shot sets up.  How far away from the green are you if you hit a 240 yard drive?

The second shot (it's a par 4), after a 240 yard drive, is about 120 yards.  The green is pretty small, maybe 15 feet of green to the right of the hole location shown, and 25-30 feet to the left.  The pin is also only 6 or 7 paces on, with only about 15 paces behind.

The other interesting feature is that any approach landing on the fringe will trickle into the deep rough short, and sometimes will end up in the lower fairway.

That one's a par 3 of about 130.

Based on a stretch interpretation of the word "facility," I'll venture that it is part of a resort.

Is it in New England?  The surrounds remind me of those at Crumpin-Fox, but it's certainly not Crumpin-Fox.

The abundance of bushy pine trees indicate a high elevation (not to mention the mountainousness of the property).

Well, I got nothin'. ???

Here's my last pic, and a couple clues....

It's in New England.

The greenside bunker in pic 3 is named after a University.

The picture below, a short par 4, plays to the same green as the par 3 in pic two, approaching the green from 90 degrees to the right in pic 2.

It's a crap pic, due to the fuzziness, but you get the idea...

So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

That first picture had me thinking it was an old picture of Uplands' famous 8th hole.  Uplands is a Stanley Thompson course.

I was wrong.

Bing!

Ralph Barton is the architect of record.

Half of the mystery is solved.  I had an e-mail correct guess of the course by John Tew, but no one has posted it yet.  :)

Nope, but very good guess....CC of Greenfield (another Ralph Barton) was one of my great hidden gem finds of 2005, what a great afternoon I had there!

My last clue, the layout of the course below.

The black lines show the generally accepted holes, and the name of the road above is a hint.

Pic 1 above was taken from the dogleg towards the far left green.  Pic 2 was taken down the vertical axis towards the green in the center of the aerial.  Pic 3 was taken from the fairway on the longest (lower) hole on the aerial towards the green with the two bunkers, the left-hand one being the "Yale Bunker."  And Pic 4 was taken from left of the yellow patch in the aerial's center towards the same green as in Pic 2.

And yes, there is a former green on the private property in the upper left portion of the aerial.

Any last guesses?
