"The man who is blowing up America"
« on: March 21, 2007, 01:25:35 PM »
It was written:

"He thinks out his construction schemes in a Napoleonic way, and he is going about America blowing hundreds of acres up in the air and planting smooth courses on the leveled remains."

Of whom was that written?

Search engines are powerful, Dan.

So I won't ruin it for now... but let's just say it's not who I immediately thought of.  Interesting article this was plucked from, also.

Search engines are powerful, Dan.

I'm aware of that.

They'll be the death of Trivia Klatches.

DAMN THEM! STAY AWAY FROM THEM!

I considered doctoring the quotation, to throw off The Searchers -- but that would violate a principle I hold even dearer than the sanctity of Trivia.

Nope. At least not according to Ron Whitten.

(And, no, it wasn't Burbeck, either!)

It should be Brian Silva, who talks freely of "blowing up" bad features ... and one other reason which I won't go into.

I cheated and used the search engine as well...definitely not who I would have expected!

I don't know Mr. Silva. Would you say he's a tall man?

I thought it was a real shot in the dark...there is a picture in THE GOLDEN AGE... by Geoff Shackelford that shows about 20 dynamited tree stump holes...not sure if it was even Tilly, but it was worth a shot.

Not according to the article I'm quoting.

Interesting, there's going to be hell to pay around here.

More interesting is that Gooooogle search worked and Yahoo failed.  That means Huckaby crossed over to the other side.

Searches work great and it's cheaper than the NYTimes crossword puzzle clue line!

That post is in perfect John Kavanaugh style...JK, did you finally make it East of Indiana? It's still too early to play 'round here, but stick around for a couple weeks...I'm sure we could dig up someone that'll play with you.

Another line about the same man -- quoted in the same article:

Please.  I used Yahoo and found it immediately.  Cut and paste quote into search block.  Oh at times I do cross over to the other side, just out of convenience... but this was not one of those times.

Since it seems so unlikely, I am guessing it's Donald Ross.

I'm looking for a game this weekend.  I figure that we can go to So Jersey.

You up for it?

Would love to Bill but this weekend is no good...loaded up with birthday parties and other *wonderful* things with the little monsters...

Oh and by the way, I cheated and looked...not too far off Dan, was I?

DING-DING-DING-DING-DING!

It is Donald Ross.

The year was 1912. The critic, according to Mr. Whitten, was "British writer Harry Leach."

Was he clueless? Or was there something to his charge?

You mean "Dynamite" Donald Ross, don't you?

I think the rest of the paragraph puts some context to the soundbite:

Quoting: "Ross routinely piled up earth to create tees and greens. He reclaimed 40 acres from the sea to create Rhode Island CC. At other sites, he rerouted brooks to enhance holes. The secret, if there is one, is that Ross reshaped the land to such an extent that the finished results looked natural."

Those "piled-up" tees and greens look ... natural?

Really?

I'm looking forward to hearing what other (and much more informed) posters have to say. But off the top of my head:

Dynamite, huh? Wow, I'd have thought that maybe a small bulldozer would've been enough, no?

With all those courses he built in Florida and North Carolina,  what exactly was he blowing up?

Maybe he blew up some flattish land, but only to turn it into different kind of flattish land, more suitable for golf.

Sort of like Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke", digging and filling in that hole in the ground, because, after all, what was that dirt doing in the Boss' hole-in-the-ground anyway.

seems the link does not take you directly to  the article.  You may have to type in the rest of the link yourself.
