If money is no object and I would never return to the area but for this one round, I'd choose #2, of course.  I'd rather play Pine Needles on a daily basis, and Mid-Pines sprinkled in for good measure...but one round there must be at #2.

I sure do love Pine Needles (pre-renovation) though!

Pine Needles is excellent...it's a really nice place at a good price.  If you can sneak away for a day...Tobacco Road...if you can sneak away for two...Pinehurst Number 2, then The Pit.

Bill, with great respect, I must dissent on Mid-pines.  This is just my personal taste, but I found it a little rustic for my palate...a sort of watered down version of Pine Needles.

I didn't find Mid Pines to be Pines Needles lite at all - it's a very different layout.  At Pine Needles you are mostly driving over a ridge to a green on the far side down below.  At Mid Pines you are mostly driving from a ridge down into a valley and playing uphill to the green.  It's two completely different course styles to me, and that's why I enjoyed playing them both in the same day a couple of years ago.

Well, I happen to like Dan maples, who is super kind to me and to my friends and the Pit is his breakout design.  There are some great holes.  even Doak says so in the CG.  Personlly I just found Mid-Pines a little bland for my palate...again this is purely a personal taste issue, but with Pine Needles next door and Tobacco road down the street...and of course Number 2...

You did not make a mistake.
It's the safest play.
My favorite is TR.  
But the GCA doesn't work for some.
#2 costs too much for a one time play without an overnight stay.
I also love Mid-Pines.  
Just make sure you hit it first if you are playing 36.

 good move. I spend alot of time at Pine Needles and Pinehurst, especially during these months.

When people are coming down to play at Pinehurst, unless they are totally nuts about seeing a new golf course, I point them to Pine Needles and Mid Pines, and the Pinehurst Courses.

The main reason besides from the golf being good, is the drive to Tobacco Road sucks. Playing Pine Needles and Mid Pines is great, never crowded, play your golf, head to the bar in the clubhouse, Mid Pines has a great one. Run down the road to Dugans or the Pinecrest. No hastle. Tobacco can be a pain in the ass but a hell of a good time.

Thanks for the tips.  I'm actually planning an April vacation with my (non-golfing) wife down to the Virginia Blue Ridge and then the Carolinas, and am thinking about where to stop the car and take out the golf clubs.  Pinehurst may fit the bill, so these ideas certainly help.

And I may decide to play Pine Needles, but when I saw Jay's comment about it being a good price I looked up the greens fees and thought if that's a "good" price, what's a "bad" one in Jay's mind?  (No offense Jay)

I mean, I'm willing to pay for great golf, but I'd rather pay a lot less for very good golf.  Is Pine Needles in the great or just very good category?  The only time I've paid more than $110 for a round was Bandon, and obviously that is world class.

Since you are from VIrginia, have you played Mike Strantz's courses in the Williamsburg area, Stonehouse and Royal New Kent? If not, RNK is very special.

The reason I recommend Tobacco Road and Tot Hill Farm is you will see things you have never seen before and get to enjoy the creativity of Micheal Strantz.

I would play Tot Hill Farm first and then Tobacco Road. Even your wife who is not a player, will enjoy riding the courses with you and seeing what has been done.

Nothing against Mid Pines or Pine Needles, but you've played those holes before a 1000 times, not so with THF or TR.

I've only been to Pinehurst one, but this strikes me as one of those unanswerable questions.  There are so many golf courses in that area and so many terrific golf courses that one can hardly go wrong with choosing any of the top five or so.

I thought Pine Needles was boring as hell and might have fell asleep if the bunker themes didn't change every other hole.  The so-called restoration work kept waking me up like random shock treatments.  Pinehurst #2 was one of my lifetime golfing highlights and Tobacco Road is always fun to think about.  The guest of a member rate at Forest Creek is a can't beat deal at less than $100 when I played.  Now you just need to find a member.

I would play Mid-Pines over Pine Needles unless I was planning on watching whatever women's tournament is coming I think this year.

Pete and I couldn't keep you awake on the course at Pine Needles  How about that great caddy you had that day!  I'm really suprised you thought Pine Needles was boring, I really loved the place, but maybe because it reminded me of some of the great courses up in the north east even though it was in North Carolina.

Forrest Creek is fantastic as well, but I have to say Pine Needles is my favorite course in that area.
