Most Likely to Try to Improve
« on: March 19, 2007, 04:08:12 PM »
What are the Three Most Likely Areas in your golf game that you will try to improve this year?

For me, it's:

1.  Pre-shot routine.  I swear to the ever-loving deity that I will adopt a pre-shot routine and stick to it.

2.  Practice at least one day a week that I don't play.

3.  Take several short game lessons, including putting, throughout the season.

This is the golfer's version of a New Year's Resolution and the success rate is about the same.  What say you?

1) Consistency - hopefully playing more and shortening my swing a bit will help with this.  The main idea is to get more in touch with my swing, so I can regain fuller control and feel of how to shape every shot I hit.

2) Short game - I long for the days as a teenager when I fearlessly attempted any shot based solely on feel, and usually pulled it off.  Technical thoughts have muddied up that feel and made me play a bit more safely, and as a result my short game enjoyment and success have suffered.  The course I'm on this year will put a premium on it and hopefully I'll respond!

3) Better management - I think most people who enjoy the study of course architecture generally employ better course management than the average golfer.  However I too often fall into the camp of the tempted and get fooled by things I shouldn't, and as a result this season I want to focus on engaging the golf course a bit better and work more on my game's relationship with the features I deal with on each shot.  This should help my score a bit but primarily give me a more thorough enjoyment of each round.

The bottom line is to have even more fun and shoot some better scores as a byproduct.

My goal is to be happier on the course..... ;D

After two years of playing a public course that was routed backward, I am back at the country club routed by Donald Ross.

I may not play any better, but the shots it presents give me some joy.

Slowing down my backswing...

Hunting down Bill McBride for an improved rematch!  :P ::) ;D

Driving the golf ball.  Putting the ball in play has been my downfall.  I'm starting by taking a half inch off the driver when I regrip next week to make it 44 inches. I hit my Tour Edge Exotics 3-wood nearly as far as the driver and with accuracy so I may just throw the driver away if the 44 inch experiment is a failure.

1. Improve flexibililty, strength and physical fitness.

2. More lessons.

3. More short game practice.

Goal is to bring the handicap factor(index) from 8.5 to below 7.  Will be tought to do without precipitating a reaction from the better half.

-Putting - Suddenly 4 footers have become a crapshoot

-Driver - hit more fairways or at minimum, reduce the number of AMFs per round

-Mental approach to scoring well - many a round has been derailed by four words - "If I can just..."

Ryan,

What's an AMF?  I think I also might have that problem! You can IM me if the description is not fit for public print.  ;D

I spent the last three days working on improving my hypocrisy at Barton Creek in Austin, using my pal's Bushnell rangefinder to improve my distance measuring ability.  I actually got pretty good at it there toward the end.

Although it didn't help my ball striking much.  ::)

1. Loss another 45 pounds, increase flexibility and strength.

2. After #1, get custom fitted for clubs and adjust which clubs I carry.

3. Use enough club to be putting even if I don't hit it 100% for that day. Chip with enough club.

1. Spend the next six months making my body better suited to a good golf swing.

2. Spend the six months after that learning the best golf swing that my body will allow.

3. Try to do #1 and #2 in a way that doesn't involve bearing down hard and expecting to see results whenever I demand them.

4. Whatever the outcomes of #1, #2 and #3, always always always remember that what really matters is getting the ball in the darned hole!

Geoffrey Childs,

Don't forget to slap some lead tape on the sole to get the swingweight back up after you cut the shaft down. I like sub-45" drivers but sometimes it can be tricky to get the feel right....

Seriously, my bunker game right now may be the worst of any 12-13 handicap in the universe.  Especially when the bunkers are hard or wet.

A low bounce lob wedge works best for me in those situations.  The high bounce sand wedge seems to bounce up into the ball, where the low bounce club can "nip" the ball more effectively.

I much prefer hard/wet bunker sand. When it gets real fluffy it's harder to get my feet dug securely and if I hit a little too far behind the ball it goes nowhere. Hitting off a steep upslope in powerdery sand is something I'm just terrible at. But unless it's absolutely concrete-like the wet sand is just fine by me.

FWIW, my highest lofted wedge has fairly little bounce but a medium wide sole.

Thanks Tom- I regripped my clubs this evening and sawed the extra 1/2 inch off the butt end of teh driver (shaft is already tipped an inch).  I did add 3 swignweight points worth of lead to the head.  It's even more tricky since the Fuji SIX shaft is an ultralight to begin with and at 44 inches its a light club. The SIX is an experiment to gain some swingspeed to this senior bodies swing.
