Having played Cypress Point twice, my next pick would be Pine Valley.  I agree with Huck though, I'd probably then go with Augusta followed by St. Andrews.

Tom H,

Doesn't the fact that Augusta today isn't anything like the Augusta you watched as a kid affect your answer at all?  Yeah, I know, you wouldn't be playing the Masters tees and so wouldn't see all the new length added in the past 10 years, but they've changed the greens to bent, moved bunkers around, added trees, added the 'second cut' (but maybe that's only there for the Masters and not for member play)

I'm not saying I really oppose the changes they made, because they have to do something to keep the Masters from being a boring wedgefest like too many other PGA events.  But it has really removed a lot of the magic aura from the course for me.  I suspect seeing the 1960 Masters broadcast next month and seeing yet another version of Augusta will remove even more of it.

On the other hand, every time I walk on TOC's turf, the aura only grows stronger.  Yes, that course is nothing like it was when Mary, Queen of Scots walked it, and the Road Bunker gets rebuilt every few years and is never quite the same as it was the last time, but modulo the different equipment we play with today the strategy is essentially the same today as it was when the course was shortened from 22 to 18 holes.  If I choose, I can use the equipment that Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, et al did and face the exact same shotmaking challenges they did.  You couldn't even relive Nicklaus' 1975 Masters victory because the course is so different barely 30 years later!

I'm not saying I'd turn down an opportunity to play Augusta, but if you ignore the exclusivity factor I could think of dozens of courses I'd jump on first.  I have to wonder if you ever did get your opportunity to play there if you wouldn't come away disappointed since you've built it up in your head for so long.  Once you got over the fact that you got to play somewhere most golfers never do, would it really rank above your experiences at TOC and other great courses you've been able to play.

CPC for me, with PV as #2. There are plans for others that hopefully will happen in the years to come!

Failing that, Ballyneal.

I was worried you might post this on the other thread Mark - the one about where you feared you would never play.

I have a little more faith than that, James.

Not much, but a little. :)

There are several things happening, so hopefully it will be a goer sometime this year one way or the other.

You are most welcome as soon as it is finished, of course.

that would be delightful.  Including a cup of tea on the decking afterwards. Or something else if you so choose.

One day soon, hopefully.

Mark,

There is no reason why you cannot play it now.Its all there and every hole is playable.

Perhaps we should organize a day.I assume no one would care.

Doug S:

No, the changes in recent years at Augusta change nothing to me.  I still watch the Masters today.  And if I play there I'd have every intention of playing the way back tees once, then a set that might replicate the approach shots of the pros for me - so say at least 50 yards up on each hole.

Now as for whether I'd come back disappointed, that is entirely possible.  I have indeed built it up in my mind.  But I've yet to have that happen with any other great course I've played, and I have played some doozies with some ungodly expectations.

In any case this does remain the one course I'd like to play more than any other.  And the exclusivity of it is just a small part of why that's so.

Luckily, the one course I'd like to play most is the one course that I play the most.

Of the American courses that I haven't played, I would most like to play Cypress Point on the west coast and Myopia Hunt on the east coast.

Royal Melbourne composite course.
I played the East course about 20 years ago and I have been dreaming ever since of going back.My golf would have to improve a lot to get on the composite course so the West would be a good compromise.

For those that know the Australian courses real well, where should New South Wales fit in this category for just Aus/NZ?

I played it once during December 2005 along with a couple Melbourne courses (Kingston Heath, Commonwealth, Yarra Yarra and Kooringal) and would put NSW at the top of my list if a return trip ever comes up.

Royal Melbourne would also obviously be up top, and from what my brother tells me, Barnbougle as well.

Bill,

While Shinnecock Hills is my favorite golf course, it is a special occasional treat.  The commute is too difficult to play it most often.  It once took Tom and I seven hours to get home from Southampton.  My second favorite course is only seven minutes away on the outskirts of Ardmore.  I feel very fortunate to be a homer  ;)

Spot on, Mike.  It is the second best course on the Peninsula as is.

You're right, though, they probably wouldn't care - but I bet you there would be a green fee. ;) involved somewhere.

Of the courses I've played, #1 Dornoch - be quite content to play there for the rest of my days. #2 Pac Dunes.

Of the courses I haven't played I suppose there would be several, most of which have been mentioned in previous posts.  With that in mind, I think Barnbougle Dunes would be my #1 choice.  Of course if  I'm travelling that far, the other Oz notables would have to be played too  ;D
Give my love to Mary and bury me in Dornoch

Having had the ridiculously good fortune of playing one or two of the afore-mentioned golfing venues of this thread, I have given all due consideration to the possibilities and come up with the only ONE course for my personal recommendation.

You'll all be second-guessing CPC right now, but you're wrong. Certainly, it is easily the best golf experience I have ever had (by a couple of light years), BUT...

If Beelzebub offered me the excruciatingly painful choice of playing only one golf course for the rest of eternity, it wouldn't be the MacKenzian masterpiece, for it is situated in a foreign land, too far from my blood. It is witheringly beautiful, but that beauty is alien. It is a magnificent piece of design, but that design requires a long journey to appreciate. It is located in a landscape of extraordinary majesty, but that majesty belongs to an ocean I am unfamiliar with...

THE Course I would choose to play FOREVER, - if I had only one - is the Kings at Gleneagles. SCOTTISH landscape, design, history and golf blended perfectly. I love it!

I do hope Dr and Mrs V will come to appreciate the venue as much as I in the near future...

Augusta, again from watching on TV, the one place I have to play. Second would be TOC.

Quote:

from Mark Pearce,

"Let me get this right. This thread is about courses we think are so good we [only want to play just one]?  Can't say I can think of [just one] that falls into that category.  Plenty of great courses I  [want to play] though."

Are there not thousands of golf courses that we all want to play because A) we CAN'T play them everyday, and B) we think that we are supposed to play them?

Everybody has a golf course that they want to play (and probably never will). How many people cite Cypress, NGLA, or Augusta as the "one golf course you would like to play"?

These are simply the knee-jerk responses that we as design enthusiasts are supposed to say.

Think of it another way; rephrase the question as: "What's the One Girl You Would Like to "Date"?

Is there honestly only ONE girl that you want to "date"?

If the OC is Princess Di, Augusta is Pamela Anderson, Cypress is Marilyn Monroe, Pine Valley is Katherine Hepburn, etc, etc, etc?

Who do you choose? Can you honestly choose just one? I don't think you can.
