What's the One Course You Would Like to Play the Most?
« on: March 14, 2007, 10:16:05 AM »
One of the golf web sites has an interactive poll asking repondents to choose where they would play if they had the opportunity for a round at one of a group of super-exclusive places (eg Augusta, Cypress Point, Pine Valley and maybe Shinnecock).  As is always the case with polls of this kind, Augusta wins by a mile, getting at least 60% of the total vote.

I am curious as to whether GCA'ers would show the same bias towards Augusta that everyone else appears to have.

If this thread has been done before I'll delete it.

A toss-up between Cypress Point or Merion East -- CP because it looks to be the most exhilirating course in the world, and Merion because it's the most important course historically in American golf.

NGLA runs a close third.

It's not even close.  There is only one course I'd book flights immediately to play if an invite was forthcoming... and only one course my wife would understand and support my decision for....

Augusta.

ps - I'm betting my answer is shared by very few in here.  Even those who agree with me won't have the guts to say so.... Augusta being so uncool in here, you know.  But we'll see...  ;)

If held strictly to just one, I'd have a very dificult time picking between Pine Valley and Sand Hills, most likely.

Up until 2006, The Old Course, Cruden Bay and Dornoch were at the top of my list.

But in July I played them in July, as well as both courses at Nairn, Brora, Boat of Garten, The New, The Jubilee, Lundin and North Berwick.

So now it's got to be Cypress Point.

I finally managed to see ANGC in person two years ago, and although the member's tees look like fun, I'm not aching to play it.

Pictures of Cypress make me want to play it so much that my teeth hurt.

I also have to say Augusta. Wouldn't be able to pass up the opportunity to play a course I know so well from TV. Just really curious as to what shots it calls for and how I would play certain holes.  Could I hit the draw tee shot the 13th calls for?  That sort of opportunity is pretty irresistable.

Of those I haven't played ... Dornach and Cypress.

Cypress Point.

Augusta would feature somewhere in the top 10 though.

You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Pine Valley.

I want to try and picture it through Tilly's eyes. He spent many years trying to create an equal to it. Considering the body of his work and his reputation, it almost seems like the quest to do so was his personal "white whale."

Of courses I haven't played, I've decided that I must be a masochist because I'd place seemingly penal Oakmont, Winged Foot West, and Muirfield ahead of strategic ANGC for a drop everything round.

Perhaps it's also because I've walked ANGC before that it's not on the top of my list, but that can't be right because I walked Oakmont all weekend during the 83 US Open and it's still at the top of my list.

NGLA in America.

Muirfield in Scotland (I've played most of the rest there and Ireland.)

Royal Melbourne in the rest of the world.

That is the same answer as I gave in 1998 when the Executive Director of the Oregon GA asked all the tournament volunteers at a meeting.

The rest of them either chose Augusta or Bandon Dunes which was not yet open, but had everyone in Oregon buzzing in excitement.

I'd already played Bandon so it wasn't on my list.

After my trip there in June it will be Augusta.

I'm waiting for JakaB to jump into this topic and squash you all for your simple attempt to gain access to these courses.

He then will start a new topic that "What's the One Course Outside of the Top 100 You Would Like to Play the Most?"
"... and I liked the guy ..."

Mark me down for Cypress Point.

With Pine Valley second, and Augusta third.
