British Golf Links-H. Hutchinson

I just wanted to say that I received this book yesterday and it's absolutley fantastic! If anyone has not seen this book, I urge you to get a copy. Wonderful photo's of 51 courses in the British Isles from the late 1800's. There is a gentleman who is selling brand new copies on ebay for a very good price. Considering that there has only been 2000 copies reprinted of this book, I would highly recommend to not hesitate to obatin a copy. It is well worth it!

David:

I bought the same book a year ago at Borders and I think it's still on the shelves in many places, so one should not pay much over retail for it.

It is an excellent eye-opening book.

Tom, I'm curious, what are some of your favorite arch. books and why?

David,
I bought the excellent reprint in the last year or so. I was so happy it was reprinted. I had always wanted a copy, but the original was more than I could afford. I am not aware of any limitation in the reprint of this book so I would be HIGHLY suspicous of that claim as a selling point.

That may be Ed, but regardless, I love it. It really should be a cornerstone book for arch. lovers. As Tom stated, it really is eye opening. It's amazing how good the quality of the photo's are.

BTW, I paid $35 for the book, which was steal IMHO.

And Daniel Wexler wrote a really good foreward to it.

I love the book, you can get an idea of how good it is by visiting the USGA website - but you can't imagine the quality of the reproductions in the reprint.

Incidentally there was an edition of the book about 10 years before, it's very different even for the same courses, and they have a copy of that you can download articles from.  That must be one of the raresy books as I never seen that edition at any auction.

Ed or anyone what was the title of the earlier version?

PS check the postscript where it says what happened to many of the courses - written by Daniel Wexler and Mark Rowlinson. ;) ;)

I believe I was.  Thanks David.

the rewrite but particularly the change of title says a lot about Golf in the 1890's.

I have a copy and have enjoyed it very much.  Hitchinson gives the reader glimpses of the courses while they were still in their infancy. It is worth the read.  And I guess it was one of the first "coffee table" books printed.

David,
You're right, at $35 it is a steal. I would happily pay up to $150 for the book, given that the original is generally over $1,000. And you are also quite right that it is a great book for lovers of golf course architecture.

Not only could he write but he also redesigned Brancaster and for anyone interested Prince's have produced a booklet for £10 to celebrate it's centenary and it reveals he was consulted on the original layout of that one too.  Will post more on this another time.
