BUDA CUP V: All England V Rest of the World
« on: December 19, 2006, 07:20:18 AM »
I have sorted out most of the arrangements for the Buda.  The ITINERARY is as follows.

Wednesday 19 SEPT www.alwoodley.co.uk: BREAKFAST at 8:30ish and tee times at 9:40 & 2:40.  The morning game is for those in town.  A soup and sandwich lunch will be served before the afternoon BUDA game.  The cost is £70 for a round or the day, plus food costs.  I think we have the tee for approximately 1 hour.

Early reports seem to favour www.akbars.co.uk. for dinner Wednesday.  Both the Former Pop Star and our local man, Andrew Mitchell, claim Akbars is heaven in England.

Thursday 20 SEPT www.alwoodley.co.uk: BREAKFAST at 8:30ish and tee times at 9:40 & 2:40  Both games will be part of the BUDA.  A soup and sandwich lunch will be served between games.  The cost is £70 a round or the day, plus food costs.  I think we have the tee for approximately 1 hour.

Dinner will be at the club.  The cost is yet to be determined.  NICK LEEFE has kindly offered to say a few words, hopefully to be followed by a Q&A session.  The centenary book for the club has recently been completed so there is fodder for discussion.

Friday 21 SEPT www.moortown-gc.co.uk  9:07 & 3:15  The morning game will be part of BUDA.  Lunch will be served before the afternoon game.  The cost is £81.00 for a round (includes strokesaver) or £96.00 for the day, plus food costs.  We have the tee for just under an hour.  I will check to see if breakfast is available.

I have booked 24 single rooms for the nights of Tuesday 18 Sept through Thursday 20 Sept at www.headingleylodge.co.uk  The price per room is £50 (single or twin).  It is possible to ask for twins.  I would appreciate folks going through me to book rooms unless you are staying at times outside the group booking.  IF YOU ARE STAYING ON MONDAY OR FRIDAY NIGHT YOU WILL NEED TO BOOK OWN ACCOMODATION!  There is hot breakfast available in the stadium and a continental breakfast available in the room, however, there is an extra charge AND I have made arrangements with Alwoodley to eat breakfast at the club.

I am asking for a NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT of £75/$150 to secure a spot at BUDA V.  I have no problem with GCAers inviting family/friends so long as things don't get out of hand.

I have arranged tee times at www.gantongolfclub.com.  Below are the dates, times and people who committed.

TUESDAY 18 SEPT at 10:00am & 3:15pm  £73

Mark Chaplin, James Goby, Craig Disher & Joe Fairy (afternoon only)

Mark Pearce has formed a splinter group (I expect it was arranged so he could play with a rock n roll star) and booked Ganton for TUESDAY 18 SEPT at 10:10(?) & 3:25(?)
Mark Pearce, Giles Payne, Conrad ? & Lloyd Cole - FULL

SATURDAY 22 SEPT at 11:15 & 4:00  £83
Philip Gawith, Sean Walsh & Tony Muldoon

SUNDAY 23 SEPT at 10:30 & 3:30  £83
Mark Bourgeois, Sean Arble, & Andy Levett

Andy Levett booked www.sportnetwork.net/main/s235.htm (Seaton Carew GC)

SATURDAY 22 SEPT at 10:30 & ?  ~£50
Andy Levett, Mark Bourgeois, Sean Arble, Brent Hutto & Craig Disher

Brent Hutto has created another splinter group and booked several times at the following and is seeking companions:

SUNDAY 16 SEPT 1:30pm at www.formbygolfclub.co.uk (Craig Disher slotted)

MONDAY 17 SEPT 11:00am at www.royalbirkdale.com £165

TUESDAY 18 SEPT 9:24am at www.formbygolfclub.co.uk (Michael Whittaker slotted)

Sounds great, count me in.  I'll PM you for details of where to send the deposit.

Indian on the Wednesday night sounds a fine idea, too!
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

This event may have to be renamed as the Bhuna Cup... :o

Sean, great job, "if you plan it they will come."

Unfortunately I will be in Northern Ireland at the Walker Cup on a long planned trip.  I will be thinking of you guys duking it out at Alwoodley, a great club where you will all be treated very well.  Be sure to ask Nick Leefe for a look at the original hand drawn MacKenzie map!  8)

Cant come because of school  :'(

But an open Invitation to any-one who wants to play RCD, Kilkeel or  Ardglass  me if they are coming to Ireland. If we had enough people we could have a competition. The Royal County Down Championship links will in great condition as it is just after the Walker Cup.

Anyone coming can IM me

We can all celebrate my birthday on the 23d!  I am looking forward to it...I had to argue a case in October, but happily, we won, so it worked out.

See you for tea!

Thanks for organizing this Sean, I'm in.

At the moment I can confirm
Single room at the hotel Wednesday and Thursday night.
Will play all day Thursday and Friday,
(But will let you know later about the Wednesday golf- is that acceptable?)

If something interesting can be arranged for the Saturday then I will stay on Friday night.

Deposit with you very soon.

Thanks to all those who have worked behind the scenes to make this possible.  It's a great location and fantastic value.

Rich,
I learned early in my career that forgiveness is a better request than permission. I'll be there, whether or not invited, and if not selected will be the official photographer unless the Captain decides to throw me a bone and allows me to play a match.

That is great work!!

I don't know if I can make it, just now. I'm juggling the idea of paying the deposit anyway..

But, more importantly, whether or not I play

http://www.akbars.co.uk/index.asp

This is the mighty Akbar's restaurant - I went to the Bradford branch. The Hoylake curry was excellent. This will beat it hands down!! I'd suggest making a reservation a week or so ahead if it's a large party.

Hopefully, I'll be there..

Great stuff,
I'm in for six Buda rounds but will drop out for a day if that suits others who have further to travel.
Don't miss Ganton if you've crossed an ocean to play golf.
Anyone who fancies a game at a MacKenzie links are always welcome at my course, Seaton Carew. IM me regarding the Buda or otherwise. Saturday 22nd September is available as a semi-formal addition for those available.

Great organisational work Sean - well done!!

I note you ask me to suggest somewhere to eat. Given you've ignored my hotel recommendation won't you just do the same with any restaurant I suggest? ;)

In all seriousness I would second Lloyd's proposal of Akbars in Leeds city centre if a curry is what people want.

I would confirm that I'll be there for all three Buda days (no accomodation required) and I'll get a cheque off to you after Christmas. I suspect I'll struggle for any add ons pre or post Buda as I've two other golf trips to fit in in September ;D
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

Does The Alwoodley carry Balvenie 1972 or Caol-Ila 1981?
Doubt it. Too cool. ;)
Food and drink at Alwoodley and Moortown is all you could hope for  but I do remember going to Ganton this September and being rushed all of £1.60 for a pint of the 'guest' (ie posh) beer. A crab sandwich was about two quid. Ganton cake (big slab of Stilton - strong blue cheese -and fruit cake, sounds weird but unmissable) was similarly reasonable.
To reiterate and clarify, there's a game available for anyone who wants one at Seaton Carew on the Saturday after the Buda. Cost TBC but less than other matches. Email or post here if interested.
Its best to give the Doak review of Seaton Carew, before others do: "This might be a reasonably good links layout but I was too chilled by the setting to even walk the course. 3"
Personally, I think the combination of MacKenzie's input on a rolling sandy site is stunning and chose to join in preference to those miles around.

What do you think Tom Doak was referring to about the "chilled" setting?  I'm always excited to play a MacKenzie I haven't played before, wish I was going to be there.

Bill,
I think Confidential Guide predates gangsta rap. Though Doak was chilled in a bad way I think SC's 'bad' in a good way. Having played most of the North-east England courses Tom gives a uniformly low mark to, I think his heart wasn't in it and he just wanted to be home.
This snap from the tee of the 4th sums the place up for me. Yes, the industry is visible (think of it as golf on the set of Bladerunner) but look at that wide open fairway, undefended  except by a solitary bunker exactly where you want to be.

The shorter route right is tempting, but good luck running it up past that pot...

Andy - think "Bad to the Bone" or, "Sometimes Bad is Good."

Looks wonderful; I can see how the industrial background could put you off, but the golf looks great.

Andy I've long thought Tom Doak was on a downer as he passed down the East side of England.

Most Notably

Seacroft 4. Well see Ran's review.  I don't think he bothers to write up 4's
Hunstanton 5. Another that arguably could have 2 more points.
RWN 7. Closer but also surely a candidate for anyone's 31 flavours.
Woodhall Spa 8, another that could be argued.
And the list goes on
Sheringham 4
Felixstowe 2

Where are Frinton, Thorndon Park or Sutton Bridge (plays in and out of an old dry dock)?  In future years I warrant Tom MacWood III will be posting on here about Doak's heartbroken trip down the east coast after some borders lassie refused his youthful advances!!! ;)

Sean,  I've just written you a cheque by way of deposit.

The Alwoodley Centenary Book will be available from the club from 24th January (Centenary Day) at a cost of $75 inclusive of postage and packing to the States.  Strangely enough, I don't know what they are charging in sterling!

I heartily commend Seaton Carew.  After the first drive you simply don't notice the surroundings (and Hartlepool is no picture postcard, either).  It's a super course.

Bloody hell.  In my anxiety to get the cheque out last night I forgot to give you details.

My handicap is 11, though I'm sure it'll be lower in September ;)

I'm definitely on for the Wednesday and Thursday, probably the Tuesday at Ganton (confirmation shortly) and maybe the Friday (this clashes with a society meeting I always play in).

Accomodation wise I'll need a room but may be joined by a friend (or two) and if so would be happy to share a twin.

Mr Arble,

Last week my handicap was 11? now it's 3? I'll stick at 9.

Is this event at Aldeburgh in March of interest to you?

www.aldeburghgolfclub.co.uk/agc_events_060201.htm

The course is highly regarded and the event looks good value for 3 rounds including a lunch and dinner. A little on the history of the course;

In 1907, land previously leased by the club underwent a change of ownership and the golf course had to be modified.   J.H. Taylor and Willie Park Junior were engaged for the work.   Between them they brought the experience of seven Open titles to bear.   J.H. Taylor’s bunkers are visible today, recognisable by their sweeping banks which curve both vertically and horizontally.

The new course was officially opened in 1908 and, broadly speaking, the design has not changed since, despite some ‘fine tuning’ by legendary designer Harold Colt and his partner C. H. Allison, who was later elected an honorary member of the Club.
