Mike,
This has been photoshopped, right? ;) The bunker extension on the right doesn't work either architecturally or aesthetically so I'm forced to say left. I'm not thrilled with that either since it also looks like it was grafted onto the greensite rather than built into it.

I like the one on the right even though it is a bit contrived looking. This is also under the condition that the one on the left is removed.

I like the options for pin placement that the one on the right provides but I do think the one on the left prevents a running approach from that side. Under bad conditions the left looks like it would be the proper bailout area.

That being said, the hole would provide much more excitement around the green if the right bunkers wall was knocked down so it was level with the green. The way the hole sets up it requires an aerial approach shot where long is better than short. It seems to me it would be more exciting for that chip from the back of the green if there were a risk of trickling back into that right bunker.

I don't think you can analyse one bunker against another individually... especially on the same picture.

What it will do: everybody would choose the flashier one...

The truth is: on every great course, there's a bunch of bunkers that, if analysed individually would be not that good... but you have to look at the image and playability they produce.

You have to look at the ensemble not the unity.

I like the right.  I'd flatten out the lip a little bit on the left side of the right bunker, so that the player could see the bottom of the flagstick when it is tucked right behind that side of the bunker (makes it more tempting to go for it).  I actually like the extension of the bunker.  Although it is agressive, it deceptively gives the impression that the green extends further to the right than it probably does.

The one on the right Mike lokks more "interesting", but I think the one on the left looks like it fit's more naturally into the complex.

Calling on Bill McBride for another example from the British Isles.... ;)
