CB McDonald's Chicago Home for Sale
« on: September 18, 2006, 10:57:26 AM »
Read in a local paper from Libertyville, IL that CB McDonald's home on Chicago Golf Club -- aka Ballyshear -- is for sale.  Apparently a few structural changes have been made to the house so it is ineligible for historical status.  The town of Wheaton is worried that a buyer might tear the place down and rebuild and/or make major renovations.  They are hoping that someone with an appreciation of the home's history buys it.  Apparently CB McDonald was friends with high society members, and the house hosted the likes of the Vanderbilts, etc.

The selling price is $2.7 million, in case anybody is interested.  I'm sure you can find the article on Google.

Could any of our Chigaco posters (not you Paul, this week we share your grief) wander down and provide us with a report on any A&C influence?  On second thoughts....

What a great idea.

Ok so $2,700,000 divided by 1500 is only $1800 each.

I feel compelled to help here so I’m volunteering to act as banker. Send those cheques to me made payable to C.A.S.H. (Campaigning Archiefans Save House).  At the Buda cup I’d prefer folding stuff OK?

Once I have the deeds you’re all invited.

Seems kind of cheap. I would have thought houses in a big US city like Chicago would go for a lot more.

It is about 40 miles west of downtown in a suburb called Wheaton.  Around a 45 minute drive or train ride to downtown.  If this was in the city proper the price would be 5 to 10x more.

In Chicago we name our golf clubs after towns where they are not located.  Chicago Golf Club is in Wheaton.  Evanston Golf Club is in Skokie.   Skokie is in Glencoe.  River Forest GC is in Bensonville.  And so on.

Chicago is a young town but was mostly built up by 1900. The suburbs had land for golf.  So guys with golf ambitions would buy land the next town over where it was further from the city center and cheaper.

If the town is worried why don't they buy it?

I believe that River Forest is in Elmhurst (at least that's their mailing address), but your point about the oddity of names for clubs in the Chicago district is a good one. The Glen View Club is in Golf.

Mark:  Well I'll be.  I grew up a mile away.  I just checked out both official maps and RFCC is in neither!  Technically unincorporated DuPage County!  I wonder if this is an artifact of post Prohibition dry laws.  I know until recent memory many of the DuPage suburbs were dry and convenient stretches of unincorporated lands were maintained for bars and liquor stores.

Interesting - CBM apparently also called his Southampton home Ballyshear:

Apparently both are named for CBM's grandfather's estate and manor in Scotland.

The members half joke they should have purchased the two tower blocks you can see from the course and raised them to the ground!

I'm thinking a GCA Kickstarter campaign to purchase the house and always have a home base for Chicago visits!

Back on the market for just under $1.5M, reports Crain's:

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/realestate/20180515/CRED0701/180519938/onetime-home-of-man-who-brought-golf-to-chicago-for-sale-in-wheaton

"The pillared white house on Plamondon Road is priced at just under $1.5 million. Sellers Matthew and Jess Krauser paid $1.65 million for the five-bedroom, 6,000-square-foot house on 1.8 acres in 2007, according to the DuPage County Recorder of Deeds.

"The Krausers originally listed the home for sale in July 2015, asking more than $1.97 million. They later cut the price, and then took the home off the market in late 2017. The new listing, represented by Michael LaFido of Compass, is the first time they've had it priced below what they paid in 2007."[

Isn’t Bloomberg living in CBM’s Southampton retreat? Think it has replicas of the classic par 3 template greens too.

If anyone wants to see the exterior, the first US Women's Senior Open is being held at Chicago Golf.  Free admission.  You can walk the very private classic course and see the house.

Bummer - $37k per year in property taxes.  That's about 8 times what I pay in Traverse City.  (My house is not going to sell for $1.5m though.)

Does it come with a Chicago GC membership?

The taxes are murder and with Trump's plan to limit property taxes in future years that helps make up my mind.  ;)
