Coming out of the closet
« on: July 14, 2006, 03:13:11 PM »
The sacred cow thread got me thinking about life on the other side.  I'm left handed so grant me some immunity.

Have you ever played a course, really enjoyed it, wanted to post about your experiences then remembered it doesn't have "sacred cow" status.  A matter of fact, the course seems to be the antithesis of all things good on GCA.

Have you even discouraged to post simply because you know you will get killed for you obvious poor tastes.  Is there anyone out here who likes Huck's beloved Ranch?  What about the CC of the Poconos that Cirba is always raving about?

I will nominate Spanish Bay.  Call me a kook, but I could get used to playing here on a regular basis.

I was once going to post a thread asking some questions about Kaanapali North.

I decided not to as I figured it wouldnt be worth it.

But hey, I still enjoyed the course!

Dale:

I'm with you re Spanish Bay and have said so on here before.  In fact this subject just came up during a round yesterday... man OK I can live with maybe someone could have done more or better with that site - but good lord, I play most of my golf at Santa Teresa muni. The day I call that a BAD golf course is the day I have moved WAY too far into snob-dom.

As for THE RANCH, well... hell I have played it three times. But if someone does want to praise it, I will just politely nod and assume he's insane and/or masochistic and/or just loves being up high on hills, or is high period.

But as for your point, yeah... it's pretty clear I find something to like about just about every course I play, because I just love playing the game so much.  But there have been times I've wanted to mention things and have just said screw it, it's not worth the fight.

John - great call!  I too enjoyed both courses, said nothing out of fear of Imperial wrath.

 ;D

I also enjoyed Monarch Beach, nearby... but I got a freebie there thanks to my wife... Bank of America outing... I would never pay the outrageous fees they charge for that course - and the holes by the ocean are kinda silly and shoe-horned in - but other than that it was pretty darn fun.

I guess it's baring one's soul day.   ;D

Jordan,

Great choice.  I played the Kaanapali courses, get home and all I see is "Don't waste your time with Kaanapali," etc on this site.

Was it great?  No.  But was it a complete waste of time?  Absolutely not.  I mean how bad can a course be when it's 80 and breezy everday?

That's pretty much my take re Spanish Bay - obviously not about the weather, but more the views.  Seriously, how bad can a course be with views like that?

A lot of the mountain courses are great fun to play, but wouldn't necessarily be endorsed by GCA conneisseurs.  I give you Keystone Ranch and River, Raven at Three Peaks, Breckenridge and Pole Creek, plus two courses south of Denver, the Ridge at Castle Pines North and Bear Dance.

My favorite might be Keystone Ranch, in some respects sort of a plain RTJ Jr. design in a mountain valley.  The bunkers on the sides in range off the tee are there, but I don't care.  It's walkable, it's challenging and it's great fun, especially in the morning when the clouds are lying low and the elk tracks are visible.

Tom H, I was somewhat disappointed by Spanish Bay, which I played several years ago.  It was nice enough, but I had read that it played like a links course and that it was built with Watson's input to be just that.  Of course, that's not accurate at all so, from my perspective, the course was doomed by high expectations.

I've posted a love for the current Lido and membership at and a strong positive feeling about Pine Hill. Lack of agreement from this group has never affected my willingness to post my opinions.

The tournament course at Kaanapali is being re-done - I was there in May and it was completely torn up...it will be interesting to see what ends up there.

Tom - that is a pun for the record books!!!

Me thinks the the Imperial one will admit that it's got some enjoyment there also.

John - you're probably right re our Ruler and admitting some enjoyment there.  I just recall playing it right in the midst of some serious anti-Fazio venom being spewed on here, so quiet as a mouse I was.....

I should have known Huck would be all over a thread about coming out of the closet. lol I feel that way when I say nice things about Art Hills or any one of the wipping boys, except Rees because he deserves it. OMG Sand Pines really does suck.

Thankyouverymuch I feel the same way.
Perfectly stated Dale!!!

Its not tremendous, its not overwhelming, its definitely not Kapalua but it sure is a hell of a lot of fun to play.
And, Dad and I got on for $77 with a cart for BOTH of us (not each of us)

Huck,

I could have sworn last week you had something like 3000 posts.
WOW.
OK carry on, I love all of em

What you may or may not know, and I may regret telling you anyway, is that I actually had 12,000+ posts when my "counter" was inadvertently re-set.  I'm actually the clear #2 most verbose person in this group.  Just don't tell anyone else, ok?

Well, I got ripped by a half-dozen guys last week for espousing the joys of the East Links at North Berwick.  I knew it wasn't the cognoscenti pick -- that's half the reason I bothered to post what I did -- but I enjoyed playing my match there with Kye Goalby just as much as I enjoyed Royal Dornoch or North Berwick West earlier that week.

There were some less than stellar holes but there were a few really good holes and some sensational views, that plus good company will sustain most people.

Jordan,

Huck has something more like at least 17000 posts.  He 'reset' his count by quitting his old account and re-signing onto GCA on 18 NOV 2005.  Those 3409 posts are just in the last 8 months!   :o :)  Huck, care to share what your count was when you reset yourself?   ;)

EDIT:  Whoops!  Cross-post!

When you look at the top 10 poster list on the Stats page, 2 guys who otherwise would be on that list (both above me) are not there due to quitting, then resetting.  One is Huck (who would be #2 in posts).  The other would be in the #5 slot, above MC.

I have one that I kept between me and the lamppost. I like Muirfield a hell of a lot better than TOC, but I only saw it once and I have gathered that, that is not enough to form a proper opinion on that place. Otherwise, if I don't a like a place, I have no problem stating it. I think y'all are nuts for not liking Crooked Stick more than you do, but we all have our faults. ;D

I remember getting killed with another GCA member for liking Trump's course in Bedminster, NJ.  I also liked a number of holes at Caves Valley which puts me in the cross-hairs.

Scott:

Let's get this clear once and for all:  I did NOT quit.  Never have, never will.  I came on here one day and my logon wouldn't work.  Emailed Ran about it, he didn't know why either - it was some glitch.  Hell my first thought was Ran had finally had enough of my drivel and pulled the plug on me!

But I did not do it myself - it was a computer glitch.

In any case, I don't know exactly what the count was when I was delisted and reinstated, but it was in the 12,000s.  So at most I have 16,000 or so now.

I demand a retraction.  Hell I'm proud to be #2 and actually spent awhile trying to keep ahead of Mucci before I blew him out of the water.

 ;D ;D ;D

So we have the great Huckaby 'computer glitch' of 2005 and the supposed arrival of Jordan Wall, what are some of the other Great GCA Scandals? ;D

OK, I retract the quitting part!   ;)  Maybe the same thing happened to the 'real' #5 guy.

I thought you reset your count due to the new job....thought you didn't want them thinking you spent all day....er....um.....nevermind!   ;D

Doesn't matter, by the end of the year's anniversary of your count reset, you'll be back in the top 10 anyways!   :o

Scott:  thanks.  And you're on to my goal.... reassuming the #2 slot at some point even with the 12,000 post out-take.  I figure it will happen some time in 2007.

 ;D

In terms of impressions of me based on # of posts here, hell if anyone from my job ever sees my name anyway in here I'm dead even with 3,000.  So there really is no reason to hide.

My boss walked by just as I typed that....
