A post on another board caught my eye...the right side of this hole featured a large tree that collapsed in a storm this week - illustrates the peril of relying on a tree for strategy on a hole.  Everything to the right of the tree apparently is an ESA.  Course is a Don Maples design.  What are some options for the club...of modest cost.  Apparently the club does not have a large bankroll to remedy this ala Pebble Beach.

It all depends on the size of the tree.  I saw some 15 footers at Home Depot the other day for under a $1000.  

Lets hope they do it sooner than later unlike the O Club.

The 7th hole at Olympic had a tree on the right side of the fairway almost since the begining.  The tree died or fell over at least twice and was always replaced.  In about the mid 70's it died again and was never replaced.  As a result you have a dead straight tee shot now.  Most of the green committee and certinitly the super never saw it or don't remember it so its probably gone forever.

Year before last,we had a terrible storm in the area. 'The Willows' course at Kenton County was seriously hit. Musta been 50 trees down on the course. I played the afternoon after the overnight storm. They were still working, but the course was amazingly playable. Never saw so much activity, I think. Great job! Good course [Hurdzan/Fry].

Of course, they had Kenton County tax money, but they certainly got it together swiftly and effectively.

Here is a thought, cut down all the others surrounding it and the rest bordering the hole so no one will feel bad about one little ole tree and give some room for everyone to Play Away!

We've had at least 3 trees this year get hit by lightning at Hannastown including one last week that was big enough to make the local paper.

You guys make such a deal about a the danger of a tree dying. From what I read, bunkers are in greater danger than from green committees than trees are of dying. Trees in some cases live 100s of years. Yet we have this big restoration thing going on restoring bunkers that were taken out by green committees within 25 years of being built.

Joel - do you prefer the tree to be replaced?

Kevin - From what side of fairway is the green most receptive?  If it is the right I would not replace the tree and add a bunker on the left side at the 160 head. If it is the left side don't replace the tree and play the hole in it's new and improved form.
