Strantz's genius at #11....
« on: July 07, 2006, 12:39:47 AM »
I thought I would make mention of his design at the Shore eleventh.

A well hit shot, a wee bit short of the front left of the green would creep down to the pin. I used this knowledge today and holed out for an ace.

Cunning and guile beats brute force and ignorance every time.

Congratulations. Well struck. May it not be your last. For those of you that don't know the hole, here is a short andtruncated description by Jay Flemma.

"And then there is Pinnacle Peak...The magnificent 11th hole. A par-3 downhill to a sweeping green framed by fragrant Cypress. The tee boxes are set high on rugged rocky outcroppings with commanding, staggering views of the majestic coastline. This was the last hole Mike designed at the course. Talk about "finish with a flourish." It is unparalleled beauty."

Awsome!
Congratulations.

Is it unhealthy to get some joy out of telling mr. Huckaby by how many you now lead him?  Is it 3?

Apparantly Mr. Strantz wasn't the only genius at #11 - well done!

Bob, does this work on a down wind shot? I thought this hole had issues when played down wind.

One of my favorite holres Bob.  In fact, the last Mike ever designed.  He had finished the rest of the course and when he stod on what would be the tee talking with Fuzzy Fezler and said, the problem Fuzzy is I think I have run out of golf holes.

We miss you Mike!

Congrats Bob!  I really liked that hole from a design standpoint.  Also the back tee (up top) offers a breathtaking view.  I played a quick early morning round out there a few weeks ago.  It was special, just me and the golf course (and a few maintenance workers).

Mike,

While neither you nor I witnessed the ace, I'm guessing we somehow managed to lose $25 to Mr. Huntley, nonethless.  Cunning and guile, indeed.

Well holed, Bob!

Congratulations, another one to add to your impressive list!

I love seeing all those golfers in that photo. Sometimes I think it's kind of sad to see the classic course photos people post, and there doesn't seem to be anyone enjoying the course. I'm sure Mr. Strantz would be happy to know his creation is being enjoyed by so many.

Oh my, when I just read this thread, first noting Sir Boab's inimatable style of conveying his great feat with humble deflection to Mike Strantz's genius, and then seeing the hole thanks to Scott, and finally reading Jay's account of Mike's last hole, breaking the mold as it were, I got goosebumps...

Bob, that may be a true highlight for an entire lifetime of playing golf...

Mike,

Yes. Playing in a four ball alas with two carry-overs, so it was for a dollar times three, doubled for pigging it, binging it up to six per man plus another two dollars apiece for the eagle. Total for the hole $24.00.

What a game.

Congratulations Bob. I hope the $24 was sufficient to cover any mandatory post round libations for your playing partners.

In Great Britain and other former colonies of the Empire, is it customary for the lucky/skillful golfer to buy a round of drinks for his playing companions or the entire bar?

Pete,

When next we meet, remind me to tell you about the debacle that followed my ace at Riviera's fifth hole. It had to do with the bankruptcy of The Hole In One Club. It is still painful to relate.

I was fortunate that when I got my one ace at Rustic Canyon, it was shortly after it opened and they did not have a bar yet, so I bought a round of cokes at the trailer for my playing partners.

Heartiest congratulations, Mr H. A quite brilliant shot at a quite brilliant golf hole.

Might I enquire which particular teeing ground was chosen and which particular golfing implement utilised?
