Changes at Royal Queensland
« on: March 23, 2006, 03:34:42 PM »
From another post, I learned that the extension of the Gateway overpass has neccessitated the rerouting of 7 holes at this riverside course in Brisbane. None other than GCA's own Mike Clayton has been retained for that purpose... does anyone, including Mike, know the progress of this job?

I will visiting Brisbane from the US for 4 days in mid-April and was wondering whether a site visit to take photos would be worthwhile.

thanks for any and all information.

Mike would have to work miracles to make this site worth visiting, I hope so because I nominated for membership in the hope that he does.

Courses worth playing in the region are Brookwater, Indooroopilly, Brisbane, Hope Island and Robina Woods.

Sadly, none of them are really worth a second game if you're visiting the regin.

The RQ Master Plan is on the Clayton Golf Design website.

It appears the 'peninsula' of holes along the river and back (12 through 16 or so) are disappearing, and a more squarish/rectangular parcel of land used for the new routing.

Thats all I know.

Anthony,

Royal Queensland will be an entirely new course. They lose the holes on the 'other' side of the bridge - 12,13,14,15 and 16 - and the only holes resemblig anything there now are 5 and 6.

I think it's a better site than most imagine it to be.I walked a few members around the old course and explained that it was not as flat as they thought and there was a lot of crumpled undulation that makes for some interesting golf.

The plan is to finish before the new bridge begins in the middle of 2007 and we have 9 holes shaped at this point and the first three grassed.

I'm not sure if its worth visiting - they are keeping members off the new holes - and whilst they are playing 18 all through the process ( don't ask me how) the only reason to have a game is to see what the old course was like.

Thommo.

Good decision !!- it will be a lot of fun to play.

Mike

Are they still planning on using those holes east of the bridge after the bridge is completed. I recall them saying (during our unsucessful interview) that it might be used for some sort of a practice loop of holes ultimately.

Oh, and have you tried to tonk one over the bridge to emulate Sharkie ?

Mike, thanks for your answer. I am glad you managed to convince the committee to relook at all the holes and reinstitute some of the Mackenzie bunkering look. RQ would seem to be a good candidate for flash facing as it is low lying enough not to run into some of the sand erosion problems you get at NSWGC and down the Mornington. Is there any course where you would consider they have preserved this style of Mackenzie bunkering beyond some of the holes at Cypress Point?

Thommo, at least you get some nice reciprocal arrangements in Sydney... aside from that, I do think there's more than a good chance you'll be joining a better club than existed there two years ago. Also, you no longer have to worry about a semi going through the barrier and landing on your head as you consider your approach shot on one of the the holes that passed under the Gateway Bridge.

Richard,

I'm not sure anyone is sure what happens to the east holes after the bridge is finished.
They have enough room to do a fun little nine hole course out there.

Hasn't everyone who has played there tried to hit one over the bridge?

If I wanted my sport to include not only the imminent threat of total humiliation but also the possibility of instant death, I would have continued surfing down in Santa Cruz.  :)

They aren't selling that land to pay your handsome fee, Mike?

Not that it was a selling point, but the reciprocal clubs of RQ are nothing short of superb.  NSW, Australian, RMGC, C'Wealth and not to mention some of the UK reciprocals such as Royal Dornoch....

As I understand it the club has received a healthy sum of money from the Gov't to 'reimburse' them for the trouble caused by the new bridge.

there's no such thing as rich in QLD, some are wealtheir than others but there are few few genuinely wealthy QLD'ers.
