The Donald IS coming to Aberdeenshire!
« on: March 20, 2006, 02:08:38 PM »
Well, now it looks like The Donald is coming to Aberdeenshire after all. The lead story in today's Press & Journal  (www.thisisnorthscotland.co.uk) is all about The Donald's plans to buy the Menie Estate near Aberdeen and turning it in to a high-profile golf resort. Read it and weep!

I will be interested to see how they go about creating the waterfall - could be tough there

Especially when a 50 mph wind starts blowing the water in players faces !

Aberdeen RIP

first Cruden Bay wants to get rid of quirk,

then The Mackenzie club "complete with a world class PGA approved" academy(whatever that means) and a stated goal of being ranked #1 in the world.

Now the Donald.

Glad I got there when I did

may it not spread north

Jeff -

"May it not spread north."

Sorry to say it already has! Mark Parsinen (of Kingsbarns & Granite Bay) has a golf course/resort development ready to start construction at Castle Stuart, which is mid-way between Nairn and Inverness on the south shore of the Moray Firth. There is a new upscale resort course (Spey Valley Golf) opening this summer near Aviemore. Finally, Ann Gloag (one of the richest women in Scotland) has announced plans to turn a portion of her Beaufort Castle estate (near Beauly, northwest of Inverness) into a high-end golf course/resort/conference center (ala Skibo).

Suffice it to say, all of these courses are targeting the tourist market. Commerce trumps all!

David, I can understand your misgivings, and comment that commerce trumps all...

But, we haven't a scintilla of evidence yet (unless golf course design and construction plans have been publicly exhibited) that any of these projects will be the ruination of golf in Scotland.  There seems to be no indication of who an architect might be on any of those projects, if  any are even favored at this point.

Some folks here have expressed the notion of Trump's newer course in NY or PA is pretty good.  I can't see anything anti-golf or contrary to tradition from the Kingsbarns efforts of Mark Parsinen.  And Herb Kohler seems to have made a positive effort to remodel the Dukes course at St Andrews.

I'm the very last guy to give a bit of sympathy to Trump and all his extravagance and promotion of conspicuous consumption and extreme lavish lifestyle behavior.  But, don't we at least have to review the plans before we ridicule these people?

I regret the emergence of CCFAD - expensive golf that is exclusionary to common folk just as a matter of unaffordability, no matter where it develops.  Yet, it is a reality.  It would be nice if these new projects were conceived in a more euro tradition of availability to most all who wish to enjoy the venues.  But, in reality, even the prices at TOC and so many other historic and traditional courses has reached the realm of the unaffordable to most common folk.

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

You are right. These projects will not be "the ruination of golf in Scotland." The Donald is such an easy target, I could not resist.

However, I do think these high-end projects can have an insidious effect on the nearby local golf communities. People will see well-manicured golf courses with posh clubhouses and start thinking - "why can't we have that at our club?"  "should we get rid of the blind shots on course?" "shouldn't we have a nicer proshop so we can sell more logoed merchandise to the visiting golfers?" "our course is a par-68 and is only 5,800 yards, what can we do to make our course longer/tougher?"

The same things happpen at course in the US. Is Scotland that much different?

By the way, I believe Gil Hanse is the GCA for the Parsinen project at Castle Stuart.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much then about the Castle Stuart project! ;D

Yes, I see your worries about the insidious effect of imitating the worse aspects of the American model of the marketed CCFAD golf package and product.  But, haven't your lot been watching the Masters for years?  That Augusta Syndrome effect hasn't completely crept into your golfing public's expectations, yet; has it?

You have touched a nerve by mentioning Augusta National! My opinion is AGNC has probably had the biggest negative effect on golf course maintenace practices of any golf course in the world.

I trace the desire of so many golf courses to have 1) every blade of grass perfectly green, 2) every inch of sand in every bunker pearly white and 3) super fast greens speeds directly on the broadcast of the Masters on TV ever year.
