James Finegan is in the latest T&L Golf!
« on: March 06, 2006, 04:53:47 PM »
I opened the recent issue of T&L Golf only to find an article on Waterville written by none other than Jim Finegan. I do not recall seeing his work in any of their previous issues, so I can only hope that this is the first of many installments from Mr. Finegan. I know he has some loyal admirers here on GCA, so I thought I'd post this in case anyone missed it.

Jeff,

Thanks for posting. I think that Jim Finegan is the closest writer we have in style working today to Bernard Darwin. I suspect that 75 years from now those with an acute interest in golf literature will be reading Finegan much like people today read Darwin. :)

He likes Fazio and by the look of the photos on the Waterville web site it appears that Fazio didn't Americanize it.   Its not cheap, especially if you want to take a cart (50 pounds) or rent clubs (35 pounds).

Bill:

Funny you say that about Jim being a latter day Bernard Darwin.

Less than six months ago I was walking with Jim into my golf club for lunch but first we stopped in at the pro shop. The pros in there are pretty good on architecture and I told them all that this man standing next to me, Jim Finegan, was the modern day Bernard Darwin, the greatest golf writer of all time.

Well, you have to know Jim to understand how funny he can be in the way he speaks and acts too but he waits for a second or two after that and he puts his arms out all the way like he's about to squeeze a basketball and then casts his hands to the Heavens and shrieks:

"ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA!!!"

The man is a classic in a lot of ways.  ;)

I met Jim Finegan in St Andrews in 2001. He was a delight to talk
to. I respect his travel books totally.

Joel,

I don't get your comment that it doesn't look americanized...the pics look just awful to me..

I played Waterville once and found it to be a brutally difficult day. Nothing tricked up it was just a really hard golf course.

It's definitely superior golf travel writing. I'm not sure that it is superior writing-period. It's interesting to consider if Darwin would be flacking for high-priced resorts if he were alive today.

The course is hard to judge due to the fact that all the hole shots are aerials. Also hard to estimate Fazio's impact as there are no before and after shots, but he doesn't appear to have ruined the course.
Next!

Thanks for the post. I love Jim's writing. I wouldn't put him in the Darwin category, but he does evoke the feelings about golf that are meaningful to me when I read what he has to say. I had a delightful conversation with Mr. Finegan one day when he called me at work after Tom Paul convinced him I wasn't a stalker. I had been trying to reach him to ask if he would mind signing his books that I had in my library.

I have never been to the course, but it appears quite narrow, especially if a decent wind was blowing.
Does anyone who knows the course consider Mr. Finegan to be "flacking" for Waterville?

Aidan has some great pictures of Waterville on his website www.golfcoursephotography.com. I don't know if the pictures were taken before or after the changes...

Jim Finegan is completely above being a flack for anyone or any course.  He is one of the most principled men I have ever had the privilege to know.  If GCA.com had a meeting in the Philadelphia area and Jim spoke to the group, everyone to a man would, I am certain, agree that it was one of the best talks they ever heard on any topic.  Enthusiasm and passion is in every word the man speaks about family, friends and golf.  He is such a kind and generous man and probably as well-travelled in UK golf as any non-native.  He is getting on in years but one of his recent endeavors was, I believe I have the facts right, 21 courses and 21 hotels in 21 nights in Scotland and the next year something similar in Ireland.

Like Sean, I assume Jim writes about courses he feels worthy of his time and energy, therefore the courses are seen in a positive light.  Like his personality, he sees good in everything and his nature permeates his writings.  Of the thousands of holes he describes in his books, they all sound fresh and induce detailed images without relying on photos.  I'm sorry, I think the world of this man and hold in high regard his love of golf and the depth of his work.

I know he doesn't visit GCA.com because he doesn't own a computer.  He types his manuscripts out on an old typewriter.  He is a classic!

Wayne,
Thanks for confirming what I already suspected about Mr. Finegan. I took offense to Anthony Butler's flacking statement, and that is why I asked the question.

Ed,

I took offense as well.  But Anthony Butler is entitled to his opinion, I just wonder how informed it is.  I wasn't trying to slam Mr. Butler, just the notion that Jim Finegan might have acted with ulterior motives.

I like all of Finegan's books very much, and have not found in my travels disagreeing with him in any material way about any of the GB&I courses I've seen.  His were the first books I looked at when planning where to play my last two trips over there.

I would have to agree with Mr. Finegan's "only in Philly" assessment as to whether he is the equal of Mr. Darwin as a writer, though.  I'd say he's a poor man's Darwin.  Which I mean as high praise.

While I'm on the subject of my opinions about things, I think Waterville's back nine is excellent (or it was when I played it four years ago).

I also like a lot of Fazio courses, too . . .   Maybe we in the benighted South just don't know any better.

Wayne,
Anthony is certainly entitled to his opinion, and without knowing him I could certainly be misreading his intent, but I just didn't want to leave it unchallenged from what I know of Mr. Finegan.
Regards,
Ed
