So George, I said to my wife...
"Lucie, you remember that time we were in Africa, on that safari, and that herd of elephants started stampeding, and all hell broke loose, and you were more concerned about your pretty little hat and your nice new dress, and we all were, like, running to get the hell out of there just as quick as we could, and you said 'Hold on, Lionel, I want to phone my friend Edith', and I said 'No honey, I don't think that's a good idea right now', and then you threw the phone at me..." and the last thing I remember that day is looking over my shoulder at a huge bull elephant charging towards me.
Anyway George, the Mogambi tribe of the Serengeti were kind enough to mail our phone back to us. That little white thing that I'm pointing to used to be the number 8. 'Course, it used to be a bit smaller, before that darned bull elephant went and stepped on the damn thing.
Darned if I can tell where the antenna is.

On p. 154 of Rick Wolffe's "Reminiscences of the LInks" is a photograph that is mislabeled as an aerial of Bethpage 1935. It is actually an overhead photograph of the MODEL for the entire facility.

If it is from 1935 as the information sent with the photograph originally suggested, then this was made PRIOR to the finishing of work on the courses, as the Black was not completed until late fall of 1935 & was opened in 1936.

Steve Wynn had a complete scale model of his entire "Shadow Creek" course done up by Tom Fazio's design associate Andy Banfield.

Can't see in his book about the course what the model was made of, though.

"TEPaul,
Take a good look at the 12th green.
And the 6th green.
The question is, did CBM build the 12th as depicted in the plasticine model?"

Pat:

I guess he did. Look at the "rare" aerial of both holes in GeorgeB's book. I'm assuming that "rare" aerial is of the golf course and not the model.  ;)

You can never be too sure with GeorgeB and a "rare" aerial. Can't you just see George on a latter about 30 feet from that plasticine model hanging in the maintenance barn screaming at Bill Salinetti; "Pull me a little farther away from it Goddamnit, it looks like I'm only at about 957 ft through this frickin' lens."  ;)

The real mystery, though, is if Macdonald built the 12th with that big doughnut in the green who redesigned the green and took it out? Frankly, I really, really like that green the way it is. It's just great to both approach and putt.

Perry Maxwell did something to NGLA but at this point everyone seems to have their lip zipped about that for some unknown reason.

Stanley Thompson used plaster of paris models of greens, and his associates Robbie Robinson, Bob Moote, Geoff Cornish and RT Jones did also.
Bill Hynd, long time superintendent at St. George in Toronto still has one of the proposed new third green there.

Dick K;

Are you saying Bill Hynd has a plaster of paris green model?

Yes, Bill Hynd has a plaster of paris model of the third hole at St. George that he and Robbie Robinson built. It was supposed to be a redan but they ran short of dirt/time and it did not turn out wonderful. I know Ian Andrew would like to put it back to the original Stanley, although it was quite small.
I have been trying to obtain that model from Bill to put in the Stanley Thompson archives at the University of Guelph, but to date have had no success.
Bill will be back from his annual sabbatical to New Zealand soon and I will try again.

RonF:

If you're looking anytime soon here's the plasticine thread. It was somewhere around page 6.
