Should raters play with non-raters?
« on: February 24, 2006, 11:07:25 AM »
I recently got invited to play with some raters while I'm on an upcoming business trip.  These guys are VERY well-traveled.

What's the common etiquette for non-raters while playing with experienced raters?  Do you typically try and offer your experiences, or are you better off just staying quiet and hearing their stories?  What about if your stories are only on courses where  the raters would not bother visiting (ie. your local muni)?

There's nothing worse than playing with a jerk who never shuts up about where he's played or compares every hole to some of the greats he's played just in an attempt to impress you.  I've been extremely fortunate to have been invited to play some of the great courses in the world but seldom if ever do I bring this up amongst my playing partners even if for architectural comparisons.

Now if you know they're raters and you want to pick their brain and hear about their experiences great, however, don't feel intimidated by these guys.  Their GCA knowledge MAY be greater than yours, but lets be honest, it doesn't take an architect to understand the beauty of Cypress Point, the difficulty of Pine Valley, nor the historical significance of Merion.

And never assume that a low handicapper knows more or appreciates more of what is presented in front of you.  I've met loads of very good players who purport to understand the fundamentals of GCA but who couldn't tell you even a few of the basic criteria for designing a golf hole.

Mike - I'm LOL  ;D

Brian:

There is no etiquette and you may find yourself surprised how little they know.  I've played with raters who will talk for 18 holes and others that never notice anything.  The one thing that usually nobody knows is what type of site did they have to work with and the budget.   Usually if you can figure these things out, you can judge how good of job the architect and the construction company (not always the same) did.
