Drafting linens, parchment and........
« on: February 23, 2006, 02:36:57 PM »
Need help some help.

I'm looking for a list of materrials that the original drawings were produced on. I have seen and held drafting linens produced by Travis.

There are other more solid drafting mediums that I can not remember the name for. Could someone with expertise provide me with the options.

For example what was Colt's plan of Pine Valley drawn on?

The Toronto Golf Club drawing by Colt was parchment according to the old pro.

Stanley Thompson's reports for example were on vellum.

Thanks,

Ian

All this talk of parchment and vellum is quite frankly turning my stomach. Were the golden agers REALLY still writing and drawing on the skins of beasts?

Speaking of which, Ian, I think it might be best if we were to properly investigate the little-known MacKenzie palimpsest where it is alleged that a tattoo of a direct copy of a plan of The Old Course (superimposed onto the Monterey Peninsula) was performed on the buttocks of a well-known golfer of the period.

Tis a shame you put your greasy little fingers on anything that old.  Tsk, tsk,  white gloves are de rigeur at any archives, if they even let get far enough to pick up an original.
Just having fun.. :)

But, back O/T, for any Ross materials, and over a span of time,  you might call  Audrey Moriarity at Tufts Archives,  910.295.3642.  Tufts has quite a few original documents. Some of Ross' field sketches are on a fine vellum type paper.   Audrey can tell what type paper was really used for his field sketches and course plans.

Now, you might also IM Wayne Morrison as I think he got Philly cheesesteak on the Colt Pine Valley plan.  The plan absorbed less grease than a napkin if that helps but he can explain.

Ian,
are you thinking of the early drafting plastics?
'Mylar' comes to mind...

Ian:

VELLUM!!!!

Flynn drew on vellum, paper, copied blueprints on paper and for presentations, made India ink drawings on linen with some kind of coating.

The Colt map for Pine Valley was on linen in blue ink.  Flynn always used black.

What is the damn coating on the vellum?

I seem to remember someone saying it is an oil based product.

It gives the sheets a quality similar to mylar - but mylar came later.

It's the coating that I think I'm after.

Ian, you are demanding.  I think it is an albumen coating.

I only ask because people who are smarter than me (ie. you) have the answers to all my questions. ;D

Flattery just might get you somewhere, even if I know it is not based on any reality  ;)
