Golf is a game AND a sport and why....
« on: February 23, 2006, 06:29:37 AM »
When played strictly by the rules, over a set "course" from tees designated by a Commitee, it is a "game," and a GREAT one.  Fewest shots wins, whether in aggregate (Stroke Play) or hole-by-hole (Match Play).

Otherwise it is a "sport," and a GREAT one too!  Played with variable (but agreed to) rules, over whatever "course" you wish to play.

Whatever bifurcation exists does so in the minds of people who seem to want to have it both ways--possibly due to the requirement (in 5-10% of the golfing world) that one must post a "game" score every time he or she chooses to participate in the "sport."

No?

My best friend defines a sport as a game where you can directly impede the opponent's progress.

By his definition, match play with a stymie would be a sport, nothing else.  :)

I am not sure what your question is.

Ciao

Sean

Surely, at Ann Arbor they taught you what a rhetorical question was?  No? :)

Here is how dictionary.com defines "sport":

A.
   1. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
   2. A particular form of this activity.

B.  An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

C.  An active pastime; recreation.

Golf qualifies on all three, I would say.

My dictionary says that a game is:

"1.  A sport of any kind." :)

There is a distinction, which even the late great Max Behr. was never able to effectively articulate, even in the later years when he played "Jethro" on the "Berverly HIllbillies."

I think, per my initial post, that it the distinction is not intrinsic, but extrinsic--i.e. it is not about some abstract thing such as "Golf" but how WE, as golfers, interact with a course laid out for golf, with our rules for the day.

Rich,

I have actually been thinking that this year I would like to play some competitive golf for a bunch or reasons including it makes you a better player or at least for me a better scorer. Some people have a Lee Trevino like ability to turn the focus on and off. In order to play well, I need to be Tiger-like.

Thus a dilemma, if my buddies from Fife fly in for a round at Yale, do I not speak to them in order to focus on the Men's B Flight or do I have a good time same old 80's type score with an x or two?

PS. It would probably help too if my wife would allow us to move someplace where I do not need to fight traffic to hit a bucket of balls, but that is another story. ;)

There is an obvious answer to your dilemma!

1.  Save your Fife buddies a lot of money and fly over here to meet them!  You can play a few Open competitions, 18-36 holes at places like Pitreavie, Crail, Ladybank, Balbirnie, Aberdour, etc.  You'll have to get your game face on (if you wnat to), but you'll play with other people than your friends (they'll have their own pairings).

2. When your Fife friends come over to Yale, give them the alternative of:
      a.  playing by full Marquess of Queensberry/USGA rules, or:
      b.  just having fun

3.  Lobby with Yale to have a monthly "medal" for members over the summer.  6 times a year to actually play by the Rules of Golf.  What a novel idea?!

The local weatherman here, yesterday, proclaimed it Nat'l Curling watchin day. At the end of his spiel he opined that he couldn't justify any activity that also involved drinking beer as a sport. As I type this visions of Babe Ruth running out of Comisky park, between innings, going into Murphy's to down a couple quick ones.

Rihc, Here's a rhetorical answer;
The game mind plants a tree because someone did something someone else thought was making a specific hole too easy. (Simialr to the thought behind placing the new center bunker on 15 at PB. ;) )
Where, the anti-thesis, cuts down the tree, and through thoughtful design, tempts the player to way lay the ball. Resulting in an even more delicate shot demand which should be appreciated when accomplished.

Are you still in New Mexico or have you found another source of peyote and/or are you just channeling Max Behr today for fun? :)

BTW--I'm from old curling stock, and anybody daft enough to have a beer rather than a whisky at the end of a few friendly rinks or bonspiels or whatever must be a newbie or a Canadian!

BTW2--so where's that new bunker on the 15th at PB?  Surely they didn't take shivas's "impregnable quadrilateal of pots" suggestion seriously.....???? ;)

No?

100% correct.  So what's the problem?  Play the sport when you feel like it, don't post the score.  Play the game when you feel like it, post the score.

Such is the greatness of golf, here, there, everywhere.

It is a sport which can become a game if you are ruled by the R&A. It is a game if you have a USGA handicap. This thread is way to eerie. Last night went to bed mulling Adam's game mind. I've had it reversed.

and Hrci, you need to  :) the hillbilly.

Peter, You wanna puppy? He snores too.

Rijc, Yes they listened to Shivas. From what I understand they've added bunkers left and an oversized pot bunker i the middle. I've heard the average Joe (that plays corporate golf) is so demoralized by these additions, caddie tips have shrunk to the decades low. ;)

For the record, They may not have ever heard of shivas, but in all fairness, anyone with the slightest knowledge of GCA, can come up with that idea. Literally, slightest!
