Did he offer Ames the half out of sportsmanship, or was the 10th hole a legitimate tie?

Tiger had to sink a 3-4 foot par putt to tie. That will teach Ames to watch his pre-match comments, which was something long the lines of I have a chance because of where Tiger is hitting it.

I don't buy that Tiger smoked Ames because he was pissed at him.

Tiger certainly goes looking for slights and perceived slights, and uses that as motivation.

But I don't think anyone in the game has ever had more focus and more determination tham Tiger.  I think Nicklaus had it for long stretches in his career, but I don't think anyone has surpassed Tiger in this area.

At any rate, I don't think Tiger kicks it into another gear when he's playing somebody who has slighted him.  I think he's always trying to kick into that gear, and today he just happened to hit it.

Per the USGA only once in mens competition in the last 50  yaers has someone won 10&8. A few more on the distaff side.

From ESPN.com:

And it was another lesson that Woods doesn't need any motivation. He got an assist from Ames, who on Monday noted that anything can happen over 18 holes of match play, then adding with a smile, "especially where he's hitting it."

As Woods climbed into a van behind the 10th green, he was asked if he saw those comments.

"Yes."

Did they motivate him?

"Yes."

Asked if he was going to elaborate on any of his answers, Woods smiled.

"No."

But I will... ;)

Woods to Ames (in the immortal words of Mr. White):

"Are you gonna bark, little doggie, or are you gonna bite?"

I guess the answer is "bark"...

If your'e going to try those mind tricks with Tiger at least do it right.

Remember Darren Clarke a few years back in the world match play? He and Tiger were set to meet in the final and before teeing off they were both on the practice ground warming up.

Butch Harmon, who was coaching both players at the time, spent 20 minutes with Tiger, fine tuning his swing before ambling over to Clarke. Clarke promtly told Butch that his services wouldn't be required that day as he was already "nailing it".

Butch shuffled back to Woods with his tale between legs  :)
I'm sure that little exchange wasn't lost on Tiger.

Clarke went on to win the match.

The great thing about this tournament is all that doesn't matter tomorrow.

I do think that he hitting his groove again, watch out.  He's had a decent year so far....watch out, though, big year, BIG!!!

to add to Jimmy's post on tiger's comments - Someone needs to teach Ames about providing the enemy with bulletinboard material:

Q. Were you aware of Stephen's comments yesterday that you weren't striking

TW: Yes.

Q. I assumed you were.

TW: Yes.

Q. What was your reaction when you saw that?

TW: 9 & 8.

Q. Obviously you like challenges, the idea of someone saying you're not driving the ball well. It must have lit a fire under you.

TW: You might say that.

Q. It would be better if you said it.

TW: As I said, 9 & 8.

Q. Do you think it's disrespectful for a golfer to suggest a weakness in another player's game, or is that fair comment?

TW: That's fair comment, I understand.

Q. But you don't like it, obviously?

TW: I just don't do it.

Brock..Great point..

Remember..There's not much you can do to make the greats play any harder before a contest begins.
Talk all you want..They always come to play..Their results aren't always 100% but their effort is..
I'm not sure bulletin board material effects these guys at all..
However, what you say and do when the game is on..Can make a difference..
For example..Presidents Cup a few years back.. Vijay's caddie wears the hat with the "Tiger Who" on the back..
See, when you bring it to the field, that's a whole different thing.. Then it's about respect..The greats won't get emotional either ..They'll  just take their focus and finishing abilities to another level.
And with a pretty good percentage they'll beat your brains in..

True word, Jesse!  If I remember correctly that day...Tiger never allowed Vijay a conceeded putt all day and one 2&1 or 1-up or something like that...

The stunning thing about 9&8 is, for those that have played much match play, HALF of that is a butt-whuppin.  5&4 or 4&3 is hard to say out loud after the match if you lost; I would imagine that you would have to repeat "I lost 9&8" three or four times just to get people to understand what you said.

Ames actually has a history of saying stupid things like this to the media, and about Tiger in particular. Some of you might recall that a few years back he said no one on tour liked Woods and they all hated playing with him. He said the comments were supposed to have been off the record. Then in 2004, after his only tour win, he said he would likely skip the Presidents Cup if picked because he didn't like match play. Given Woods' dismantling of him, I guess that last point is clear enough....
