Not knowing anything about their previous architectural accomplishments who would you hire, the great champion, the clown, the strategist, the putter or the bomber.  Who and why....

Funny, but John Daly might be all the above..

Mike_Sweeney

John,

Are you at bombsquad? This is golfclubatlas. Is this a trick question?

Ben Crenshaw for he and his partner's ability and track record and ability to move housing.

Brad Faxon--He grew up on an old style course. He struggles off the tee so he understands the need for recovery options. He is a good putter so I would expect interesting greens.

I think Joe Ogilvie is the guy who bashed Torrey Pines and Rees Jones.  He has made other comments about GCA that indicate that he is a pretty thoughtful guy about courses, and might have a future in that business.  I think he is now on the Tour policy board, so the other players may be recognizing that he is a pretty bright guy who actually thinks about this stuff.

That said, if you consider Crenshaw still a Tour player, how could you NOT go with him?
"Golf...is usually played with the outward appearance of great dignity.  It is, nevertheless, a game of considerable passion, either of the explosive type, or that which burns inwardly and sears the soul."      Bobby Jones

Tom Watson.  I never really got on his band wagon as a player and I begrudgingly put him as a top 10 ten player of all time.  I spose he kept beating my man so it was hard to be on Tom's side.  However, he has proven to be a man of integrity.  He loves the history and tradition of the game.  When he speaks it is because he has something important to say.  He isn't trying to flog the latest anything.  Also, and perhaps most importantly, he is not without his faults.  He may be the first person to admit this.  This leads me to believe he wouldn't be dogmatic for the sake of an argument and that he would learn from mistakes.

New plays planned for 2024: Nothing

Seve.

Seve may be the worst GCA on this planet.  He butchered the 17th at Valderama, and when I reported many years ago of the agonizing experience of playing one his first 18-hole designs (Westerwood), a noted figure on this site commented:  "They let him design a whole golf course!!!???"

Crenshaw of the players. Faldo and Love seem to being doing the right things to have a future in the business.

Pierre Fulke has done a pretty good job with Omberg and Gronhogen here in Sweden.

Will post some pictures from those when the snow is gone!

Assuming that I want somebody who is going to pay attention to detail..because I think that is rather important in designing a golf course, I would go with a player who treats his golf game in that same manner...as such Nick Faldo would me my first choice.

I think is the guy is cerebral enough to provide me with a good , well thought out plan and will do a job to the best of his ability.

David Neveux

How about Darren Clarke?  Although I'm unsure of his architecutural ability he is Irish and would most certainly make sure to include a great 19th hole!!!!

I would have thought the same thing about Hale Irwin...

Probably Tiger Woods.  He is a pretty good player and well liked by fans.

First thought the same as MWP.  Nick Faldo: analytical, hard working, driven, successful.  One of my favorite players as well.

What do you think of Stuart Appleby??
"just standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona"

I'd go for Trevino--fun, informal and a shotmaker's course.

Justin Leonard because he thinks and pays attention to detail.

Mike, what do you think of Charlie Rhymer? ::) ;D ;)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Olazabal.  Is a great bump and runner, understands and appreciates the ground game.  Drives the ball all over the place and would probably make the course more open.

Have to go with Crenshaw.  Then Jack.

peter_p

Jim Furyk based on his unconventional swing and crosshanded putting as a teenager. Charlie Rymer would be the GM.

I think that Duval would be a great architect.  He has played the game at the highest level, he knows how painful golf can be, he's an intellectual and he doesn't care what anyone thinks.  My only concern is this:  can you get a classic course out of someone wearing wraparound sunglasses?

Scott Cannon

Seve.
Based 100% on their tour persona..Which pro would you hire to build your course?...
Shivas, I agree! Seve is the man. He had it all. He was long, crooked, creative, best short game ever.  Didn't he top 10 putts per green as recently as a couple of years ago on the euro tour?
