Alternate greens at Riviera???
« on: February 20, 2006, 07:08:01 PM »
While I was watching the Nissan, I thought I saw some alternate greens--specifically, to the right of the regular 10th green, and short of the regular fourteenth green.  Are these used during a certain time of year, when the regular greens are closed?  Or are some of them used as true alternate greens?

tim,

i think you're right... i don't know for certain but i believe they are permanent temporary greens (hows that for an oxymoron?)... being in play during maintenance etc.. rather than used as alternates.

though i could be wrong.

There are alternate greens at 6, 10 & 16. They are holdovers from the temporarys that were built for play during the greens reconstruction prior to the '95 PGA. They are put in play when those 3 greens need a rest during the week. Those greens have a very small square footage and get beat up given the amount of play Riviera takes on.

There is no alternate on 14, although there is another temporary holdover in the 8th fairway which does not get used as an alternate. Maybe that is what Tim saw near 14.

I believe it's in the 55,000-60,000 neighborhood.
