Baby Sister Courses..
« on: February 13, 2006, 10:33:46 PM »
Wild Horse is obviously a baby sister to Sand Hills...Most you guys will never see it unless your ticket is punched at Sand Hills on the same trip.  What other courses in the country are baby sisters to the greats.  Will Sebonack soon join the family of NGLA and Shinnecock...Or will it stand on its own.  What other great courses are must plays if you can play the big sister course.  Hmmmm...Kingsley is a tasty treat if you throw Crystal Downs in the mix...This is tougher than I thought.  Wild Horse may be the poster child of opening acts after all.

How about:

- Lawsonia if your heading to Whistling Straits.
- Either Bay or Village courses at Kapalua.
- the other TPC course besides the Stadium at Sawgrass.
- TPC Desert to the TPC Stadium in Scottsdale.

Harbour Town and Long Cove, though I think that LC is the step child from the same father...similarities, though differences...

JK - I would have to say that Hidden Creek is the baby sister of Atlantic City CC. Although it may have two little sisters, HC and Galloway Nat'l.

Enniscrone to County Sligo even though Enniscrone is probably a better course today.

Merion to Pine Valley

Philly Country Club to Merion

Misquamicut to Fishers

Carnegie Abbey to Newport CC

Wianno to Hyannisport to Oyster Harbors on Cape Cod

Winged Foot East to WF West

Merion West to Merion East

Farm Neck to The Vineyard Club

Sankaty Head is the sister who married well vs. Nantucket who is the brother that runs a hedge fund!

Interesting way of looking at it.  I would probably say Enniscrone is the runt of the litter, but top dog.  Carne outscraps Donegal for leftovers and Co. Sligo is the big dog with no bark.

Muirfield is the big brother who gets outcharmed by little bro, North Berwick.

Pennard is the little sister who steals Porthcawl's boyfriend.

Beau Desert lays down a full house to take the last pot of the night against Little Aston.

The Island wins the Euro Lottery and ends up richer than blue blood Portmarnock.

Tobacco Road is the burger joint which outclasses the Michelin rated Deuce.

Hillside, Southport&Ainsdale, Formby > Royal Birkdale

St Annes Old Links, Fairhaven > Royal Lytham&St Annes

Really if you are ever lucky enough to make it over to the NW coast of England, it's hard to go wrong.

Just thinking, I could have added West Lancs to the Birkdale trio but it's a whole 10 minutes down the road   :D

Sean,

Ben Bulben is always howling from above Sligo, and Harry Colt bites you on 17!

All kidding aside the local members look up to the history of County Sligo. I have not played Donegal, and please no more comparing Carne to anything. It is out there on its own little corner of the world. If you and I start comparing it to others some will start to talk about what Old Eddie did not do as opposed to what he left alone!! ;)

Poor old Eddie.  Misunderstood like much of the Irish.  Except when they drink of course.

I have a lot of time for Carne, something you have probably guessed by now!

When looking at the cost to play either I would have to agree....If cost is not a factor Tobacco Road becomes a ghost town.  Forrest Creek is the true little sister of the Pinehurst region...I was even guilty of that one day.

John K:  The biggest one is that every other course in the Sand Belt of Australia is the baby sister of Royal Melbourne, and there are tons of courses SW of London that are baby sisters of Sunningdale, though in the latter case some of the sisters are even better looking.

I have never heard anyone on this site get excited about a destination trip to Galloway or Atlantic City CC...I'd have to say they are the little sisters to Hidden Creek if anything at all.  Is that area of New York/New Jersey that dead.

 John,

In the Phila/ NJ / NY area the Jersey shore is not a destination for golf. LI ,northern Jersey , Westchester County , and Philly are the destinations. So, there aren't any big brother candidates for HC.

I think it is tough to change the pecking order around here because the competition is stiff.

Interesting...I didn't have cost in mind (I imagine you could have a good solid week of golf at TR vs  round or two at #2). I wonder if what you say is true, assuming there was a way to get prestige and history and the exclusivity factor removed and just have it come down to the golf.

Pine Valley Golf Club is less than 40 miles from Hidden Creek!

There is absolutely no way that you would not like ACCC:

1. Great views over the marsh/inlets to AC
2. Great historic clubhouse
3. Flynn course so you can pick on Tom Paul and Wayne after your round.
4. Tom Doak re-do so you can pick on Tom Doak after your round.
5. Casinos 15 minutes away.

I think of CC of Charleston as the baby sister of Yeamans Hall.
CC of Birmingham-Shoal Creek
Houston CC-Champions
Denver CC-Cherry Hills
Moraine-NCR
Brookside-Canterbury

Mike,

I know I would like Atlantic City CC...I would just never plan a golf trip around it...It would only be a secondary course to play when either coming or going.

Mayday,

If you take Pine Valley and Merion out of the equation, I will take ACCC, Hidden Creek, Galloway and Blue Heron Pines Smyers any day over Philly CC, Rolling Green, Huntington Valley and Gulph Mills. More relaxed, more diversity....

Quail Crossing to Victoria National ;)

With Tom Doak becoming more famous I hope that becomes true.  From what I hear the USGA doesn't think we have another course close enough for a 36 hole qualifier...and here we have a Doak no more than 2 miles away.  Quail Crossing gets better every day.
